from the acclaimed mini series band of brothers comes the Pacific. from Guadalcanal to the Abombs. finally a release date !!!! some of you lucky dogs get HBO. i don't

HBO's 'The Pacific' gets air date

HBO's long-long-long-awaited follow-up to the epic "Band of Brothers" has a firm air date.

The 10-part miniseries "The Pacific" will debut Sunday, March 14 and will air weekly. The Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-produced project is likely the most expensive TV movie/miniseries ever made and chronicles Marines fighting in the Pacific Theater during WWII. (Nope, the attack on Pearl Harbor is not shown).

Hmmm... could be worth upgrading my cable package but I'll probably wait for the DVD's. My brother was given the full set of Band of Brothers - hot off the press- from a gal he knows that works for HBO.
Here's hoping again.

So is there a specific book upon which Pacific is based, ala BOB?

The Pacific is based primarily on two memoirs of U.S. Marines: With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie.[4] The series will tell the stories of the two authors and Marine John Basilone, as the war against the Empire of Japan rages.

Given the literary sources mentioned above, the series will feature well-known battles involving the 1st Marine Division, such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Hugh Ambrose has authored the official tie-in book to the series[29], which follows the stories of the five men featured in the series. It is set to publish in the UK in March 2010.

I'm really looking forward to this. And I'll have another reason as to watch HBO again. I only watch it few and far between now late at night for movies like Watchmen, Army of Darkness, etc.

Thanks.

Someone (maybe you) had mentioned in another thread the lack of accuracy between the book (and ultimately the movie) Band of Brothers and historical accounts. I imagine this will be the case with Pacific. It will be interesting to eventually read such feedback.

they are still today finding remains on these islands. in feb 08 a vet named Leon Cooper went back to Tarawa to chase some demons. what he found was a horrific garbage dump on red beach.

I hope these vets get a chance to tell their stories just like in band of brothers

If the trailer is representative of the entire mini-series, "The Pacific" should be well worth the cost of an HBO subscription. I read Sledge's With the Old Breed years ago, and was blown away with what he and his fellow Marines experienced in the Pacific.

If anyone is interested in finding some photo books that give you the best view of what it the Marines went through in the Pacific, definitely check out Eric Hammel's illustrated histories:

  • Islands of Hell: The U.S. Marines in the Western Pacific, 1944-1945
  • Iwo Jima: Portrait of a Battle
  • Taraw and the Marshalls: U.S. Marines in World War II
  • New Georgia, Bougainville, and Cape Gloucester: The U.S. Marines in World War II
  • Guadalcanal: The U.S. Marines in World War II

Hammel scoured the USMC archives to find hundreds upon hundreds of awe-inspiring photos to put these books together, and they are well worth the look. Trust me, the photos will knock your socks off!
