Hmmm... could be worth upgrading my cable package but I'll probably wait for the DVD's. My brother was given the full set of Band of Brothers - hot off the press- from a gal he knows that works for HBO.
    Here's hoping again.

I have HBO, and I'll be watching.

They did a great job with band of Brothers, this looks very good.

So is there a specific book upon which Pacific is based, ala BOB?

I'm really looking forward to this. And I'll have another reason as to watch HBO again. I only watch it few and far between now late at night for movies like Watchmen, Army of Darkness, etc.

    Thanks.

Someone (maybe you) had mentioned in another thread the lack of accuracy between the book (and ultimately the movie) Band of Brothers and historical accounts. I imagine this will be the case with Pacific. It will be interesting to eventually read such feedback.

I hope these vets get a chance to tell their stories just like in band of brothers

If the trailer is representative of the entire mini-series, "The Pacific" should be well worth the cost of an HBO subscription. I read Sledge's With the Old Breed years ago, and was blown away with what he and his fellow Marines experienced in the Pacific.

If anyone is interested in finding some photo books that give you the best view of what it the Marines went through in the Pacific, definitely check out Eric Hammel's illustrated histories:

    • Islands of Hell: The U.S. Marines in the Western Pacific, 1944-1945
    • Iwo Jima: Portrait of a Battle
    • Taraw and the Marshalls: U.S. Marines in World War II
    • New Georgia, Bougainville, and Cape Gloucester: The U.S. Marines in World War II
    • Guadalcanal: The U.S. Marines in World War II

Hammel scoured the USMC archives to find hundreds upon hundreds of awe-inspiring photos to put these books together, and they are well worth the look. Trust me, the photos will knock your socks off!
