May I get your opinion please?

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best,
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine
Such a wonderful beauty I see
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He'll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down,
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.

The sentences, "So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down," has a strange sound to it. Is it trying to say that I will remember the cross and when I am ready to lay down my trophies, I will go to the cross? Or is it saying that I accepted the cross, won my trophies, and will lay them down at the end?

so i'll cherish (hold dear) the old rugged cross... until ... I lay down my trophies and then I'll cling to the cross until I exchange it (the cross) for a crown?

Could these be lyrics to every Christian's life? First the knowledge of the cross (however young that knowledge came in), then a life of work and winning trophies, to lay down the trophies for the cross which is exchanged for a crown of Eternal Life?
