That's because if you give directly to the candidates election fund the funding has to be openly reported and there is a very strict limit. By giving it to a Super PAC there is no reporting nor are there any limits. The really nasty attack adds that are outright lies are not from the Candidates but from the Super PACs who are not bound by any laws at all.

Why does this distinction matter when the point is that the NRA pays a lot of money to gain political influence? Besides, if the NRA gave money to the Trump election campaign then doesn't that essentially mean that it goes to Trump?
