It wouldn’t be like the Democratic National Committee to leave the Republican vice presidential vetting process entirely up to the McCain campaign.

So, the party is unveiling a new Web site today that seeks to tie seven of the top contenders to be Senator John McCain’s running mate with the current vice president, Dick Cheney, and with President Bush.

The site, TheNextCheney.com, focuses on Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota; Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida; former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts; Senator John Thune of South Dakota; Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard; Fred Smith, the chief executive of FedEx; and Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia. Each potential No. 2 gets his or her own page on the site, with a series of links to selected news articles.
