There is no such thing as absolute truth. There are facts, but even the most benign facts are "slanted" by the manner in which they're written.

When Jessica Lynch's unit was first captured by Iraqi soldiers, she was reported dead. In an initial article about her at that time, it indicated that Lynch had joined the army because she couldn't find a decent job in her hometown, Palestine, West Virginia. She had been turned down for a position at Wal-Mart.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3. -- Officials of the record division of the Adjutant General's office say that the casualty reports received so far from Gen. Shafter's army at Santiago are unsatisfactory, incomplete, and full of errors. Already officers reported dead in these returns have turned up alive, and others who are not reported at all are known to be killed or wounded.
