Instagram boss in talks over self-harm content

The boss of Instagram will meet the health secretary this week over the platform's handling of content promoting self-harm and suicide.

It comes after links were made between the suicide of teenager Molly Russell and her exposure to harmful material.

Instagram's boss, Adam Mosseri, said it would begin adding "sensitivity screens" which hide images until users actively choose to look at them.

But he admitted the platform was "not yet where we need to be" on the issue.

The sensitivity screens will mean certain images, for example of cutting, will appear blurred and carry a warning to users that clicking on them will open up sensitive content which could be offensive or disturbing.

This is a huge issue in the UK. Molly committed suicide after viewing all sorts of crap on the net. Suicide, mutilation and self harm. All of this crap is freely available to children and the Net Moguls dont care.

Now the UK government is threatening action and they will have to clean up their act.

I dont know if it is possible to create a 100% safe environment but I suspect that it isnt. But it should be more difficult for kids to access this shit.

People have always taken their own lives and that shadow has loomed over my family since I was a child. It is ludicrous that we make it easier for people to do so.

I have no idea what action the government is planning.

Why aren't parents keeping their children from this crap? Take away their Internet access if your child is seeing abusive crap. It is up to the parents unless everyone wants to live in a fascist style world. My children grew up just fine without a TV 'when everyone had one' of those mass confusion boxes. I am sure that today's children can live without Internet if their parents choose that for them.

I'm not sure how (or even why you'd want) to keep any child from the largest data and information store available in human history.

Are North Korean children reasonably well adjusted?

Did suicide and self mutilation exist prior to the Internet?

Is there any data to support any specific connection between Internet viewing and suicide in the general population?

All the other banal boogie men like violent video games and explicit song lyrics are going to get quite jealous if the Internet gets all the credit for teen suicide.

Why would anyone WANT the government to do anything? Oh, wait, this must be the UK, where FREEDOM of expression is not as valued as it is here in the States. Well, I guess that would explain it. 'Nuff said?

Freedom of speech does not apply to private companies. Your treasured desire to watch snuff videos does not outweigh the rights of teenagers to be exposed to this sick shite.

I expect there is data out there. I cant be arsed looking for it though. Maybe more kids need to die ?

In fact, it does. Teenagers have parents who allegedly care about them enough to seek help on their behalf when they exhibit self-destructive behavior. Plus, they have a duty to monitor their online activities.

Until people start acting like adults before having children, I'm afraid the children are going to continue to die.

Ive got 3 kids and was unaware that these places existed. You can watch videos of actual people slicing themselves up. If a bar or restaurant allowed people to do that then they would soon be out of business.

That makes you a bad parent Taint. Maybe you should take more interest in your kids than what foreigners on an internet forum are saying about Trump.

The Internet is a game-changer. It is a public forum with almost complete anonymity. It can't be completely unplugged, shut down, or censored. Because of that, a lot of material that we might consider inappropriate for children is going to get to children. Content that we attempt to censor that can be seen by anyone who desires it becomes forbidden fruit We must be prepared for that.

Because we can't shield children from the darker parts of the web, we must teach them how to think critically about what they might see much earlier than we used to. Internet depravity can be just as valuable as a cautionary tale as it can be an inspiration to do harm. We need to teach our children how to interpret the data from which we can't shield them.

Parents have to up their individual game because ranting at boogey-men like "Internet Moguls" is absolutely pointless.

How do you know that exposure cause more suicides as opposed to preventing them? I would think that someone looking at photos of a suicide scene would be better informed as to what hell they are about to put the person who finds them through.

Pubic relations doesn't make it so. Parents whose kids didn't kill themselves after looking at gore would have no reason to rabblerouse. I am not saying they should or shouldn't "clamp down". I just don't see how this can be declared evidence of something.

I'll give you that, though I disagree. However, the 1st includes freedom of the press. So, unless you wish to classify these sites as something other than "the press" they have the right to publish whatever they like, even if it is distasteful. Therefore, it is up to PARENTS to ensure that they are aware of, and ok with, what their children are viewing. Just as I determine what is appropriate for my child to view.

With freedom, comes responsibility. Without responsibility, freedom cannot last.

The instagram boss made a point that shutting it down would leave suicide inclined people alone and out there. But he did not outline any help that they received.

My Uncle killed himself when I was two. I dont know why because it is never spoken about. I think that I can probably guess though. As a child I used to accompany my Nana on a sunday to place flowers and tidy up the grave.
It became her lifes mission to ensure his grave was kept in good order.

She spent time in various institutes when it became too much for her to bear from time to time. I like to think that she is now at peace and reunited. Self harm and suicide is not an individual expression issue. It affects a wider community and we need some protection. It should certainly not be a means of making money.
