The morons will make us all pay....

No, it WON'T be amusing. That's putting petty parisanship ahead of what's best for this nation.

Since our government gets to pick and choose about these permits, it needs to close any permitting off to foreign investment. Sad thing is,the greedy politicians on BOTH sides won't.
Gosh, enjoying irony is now a partisan issue?

Since our system is based on the free market, how do you propose to stop foreign oil companies from bidding on our national minerals rights...socialize energy?

All OPEC has to do is publically consider reducing output and the price of oil will jump.

Then, they get their cake and eat it to.

They continue to pump the same amount of oil, but they get a better price, or, at least by threatening to do reduce output, they sustain the high prices they have now.

They are, after all, holding a diminishing asset, so naturally it is in their interests to sell as little as possible at the highest possible price.

Hey, don't take it personally, folks.

It's just OPEC charging whatever the market will bear, manipulating the market to their advantage, just like every near monopoly does.

Don't worry about it...their wealth will inevitably trickle down to you all, won't it?

Those of us who survive this winter without freezing to death in our homes, I mean.

BUT we should not open drilling in the States? Right?

BUT we should not open drilling in the States? Right?
Unless we nationalize energy and have enough oil to totally supply ourselves, no, it's not worth the bother because it will do nothing to bring prices down. Better to encourage alternative energy.

BUT we should not open drilling in the States? Right?

What does "open drilling" mean in your definition? Open season? Drill where ever anyone wants? What?

Aren't we drilling already?

When opec runs out of oil, wouldn't you want our great grandchildren to have a reserve of our own oil?

Who gets to drill this oil? FOREIGNERS???? and it's put on to the global market?

And every hurricane in the gulf gives speculators a reason to hike up the cost of it on the global market?

Does anyone ever think about the future instead of only immediate gratification?

There is certainly a compromise between the two sides somewhere on this issue, isn't there?

CNN — LOU DOBBS TONIGHT — Aired September 9, 2008 - 19:00 ET

LOU DOBBS, HOST: Offshore drilling may offer some relief from soaring energy cost but there are other choices this country needs to be considering to make us far less dependent on foreign oil. Bill Tucker has our report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL TUCKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: 35 years ago Americans lined up for gasoline during the Arab oil embargo of 1973. Since then congress has done a lot of talking.

DANIEL KISH, INST. FOR ENERGY RESEARCH: No other nations on earth have dedicated so much time to discussing something they've done so little about.

TUCKER: And our dependency has increased, despite the fact we're a nation rich in oil and natural gas reserves. In the lower 48 states there's 19 major shale basins containing hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of gas. In addition to known reserves of 22 billion barrels of oil, the U.S. geological survey estimates that there's some 90 billion barrels of undiscovered oil and almost 1700 trillion feet of natural gas in the arctic region.

DON GAUTIER, U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: Natural gas, we think there's a potential for natural gas.

TUCKER: With all of that potential, the Department of Interior says that less than one-tenth of one percent of federal lands and one-half of one percent of the outer continental shelf are under development.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TUCKER: That's because many Americans concern of the impact they have on the environment. Alternative and renewable energies do play a role in meeting our needs. According to the Department of Interior's Energy Information Agency, hydroelectric, wind, solar, bio mass, all provide 7 percent of our current electrical needs and nuclear energy provides 8 percent in terms of support.
