The Lost Generation

Well, when the government adds $5T to the debt in two years, sucks all the oxygen out of the economy, and "steers" the economy to a less than 2% GDP growth rate, there aren't enough jobs to create decent opportunities for new entrants into the labor force. Total non-farm employment is 2.5M below what it was when Obama took office. And that is after a massive spending binge which was supposed to stimulate the economy.

If anything proves the Epic Fail of Keyensian Obamanomics, this is it.

Bushbama policies... Remember what I said about living under FDR VS Looking back and calling him the greatest president in American history? It was shit if you lived under FDR policy as he literally accomplished nothing, but he sounded like one hell of a caring guy. Just like today, it's absolute shit if you lived under Bush and Obama but man did they grow Government and spread the dependency of welfare.

I hate to make this a political issue, but it is. It’s that basic idea of if capitalism and free markets are why everything sucks then why are we so bad off when we have neither and Governments power is expanding at such a huge rate? We are in fucking 4 wars lol, of course Obama won’t end them, imagine the unemployment. A president would rather keep sending poor people to war than make policy that helps the privet sector.

I went to a neighborhood Memorial Day barbeque yesterday and it gave me a chance to catch up with the goings on in my neighborhood. I have lived on the same street for 25 years and most of the neighbors have been there that long. I have seen kids who were in diapers when I moved there now become adults in the 25-30 yr range

These are basicaly good kids from good families. None of them have been in trouble and most have a good work ethic. It is shocking that very few of them are succeeding in life. Most of the ones who finished college are not employed in jobs that require a degree. Only a couple have married, bought homes and started their lives. Most still live at home and are working jobs that don't pay well enough to enable them to go out on their own.

A couple were in the service, fought in Iraq and now can't find jobs. It is sad that at a time in your life when you should be going out on your own, getting your life in gear and starting your life that so many kids are stuck in neutral

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Stunning! 1/3 rd of the Japanese workforce became temporary workers with no benefits. Good post.

Hey, they can always go live on the Jersey Shore. That should give them a nice self-esteem boost. But if it doesn't, they've found their new home.

Funny you should say that

We do live on the Jersey Shore

Do any of you think MAYBE part of the problem are these 'kids' feel entitled somehow to their 'dream job?' They want to make a lot of money right off the bat, and not work their way up the 'ladder' of success.

Kids that were given everything are lazy. How many kids out there had to work in high school or college to pay their way? I bet the ones that did DO have jobs now after college. Others that had mommy and daddy pay for everything may be sitting on their butts texting, playing video games, drinking beer, hanging out in clubs and posting on message boards :) until that 'perfect job' comes along, since they know mom and dad will still take care of them.

The misery index started climbing in 2007. Expects things to get even worse.

Its a shame because these kids are clearly frustrated. You go to College or do your military service and you have plans for what your life will be like when you get out. Most people as they approach 30 assess where they are in life. Most of these kids are not where they thought they would be

When I got out of the service I prepared myself for anything, this was back in 2007 and things weren't as bad as they are now but I saved money during my deployment and used my sparetime at work in Kuwait to build a resume and to start applying for jobs and practicing for job interviews. When I got back to the States I separated about 2 weeks after my return, I tried to find a job in California but had no luck, in California unemployment is high, the job competition is fierce and often the wages are low, so I packed up and moved to Richmond Virginia, took me about 6 months to find a job but I can tell you almost nothing in life goes according to the plan, and that pertains to college graduates and people who separate from the Service.

I see it all the time. A lot of these kids don't want to work with any adverse conditions. At the drop of a hat they move on.

We have 2.5M less non-farm jobs in the economy now than we did in January 2009 when Obama took office.

We have 1.4M less non-farm jobs in the economy than we did in January 2001 when Bush took office.

1.4M less jobs when the population grew by 28 million over the same period.

The problem is BIG GOVERNMENT crushing the private sector, resulting in no real growth.

I'll take your word for those facts.

But I stand by my statement that some kids these days feel 'entitled' to something, and don't feel they need to work for something and grow in their job.

They want it ALL right now.

I wanted to go to college right outta HS, I knew I wasn't getting any help, other than a roof and food. The price shocked me.
My parents made to much for grants and my grades were average, so no scholorships.

I worked every shit job I could find. Anything that paid a nickle more an hour had my name in line. I ended up working 30 hours/wk at KFC and 40/wk at a factory.

Dropped KFC for school, 9 months later, I was in over my head. Dropped school and joined the Navy to get trained in what I was going to college for.

After the Navy, civilian life was alien to me. I had a terrible time getting a job close to my feild, let alone in it.

shit happens.

And as my Dad would say; Life is not fair, and it's often cruel.

You can verify the non-farm employment figures at the bls.gov site.

And population is quite easily found with a simple search.

I agree that some kids have an entitlement attitude. But many others who don't cannot find jobs because the economy is not creating any.

The kids in my neighborhood all have jobs.....what they don't have as they approach 30 is a career

It's a symptom of the times. This is why I fight with the right wing everyday.

To them, it's either their way.... or Communism.. Socialism... Liberalism.

But look around... this is the result of 30 years of failed policy of kissing up to Henry Potter's of the country.

If you don't know who Henry Potter is... Watch "It's a Wonderful Life" this Christmas.

Your playbook is very, very limited.

No yours just involves blaming everything but the real culprit... which makes yours much bigger and mine more limited.

When the Conglomerate is sitting on $2+ trillion dollars in profits because they have slave labor across the globe making their products for them AND they can afford to wait it out until they get their way in gaining even more power and influence over our daily lives, there aren't enough jobs to create opportunities for grizzled veterans of the labor force, let alone new entrants.

This is the end game of Reaganomics. Give any group enough power and tyranny is the result. It's going to take a revolution to get the Giant Corporations to release their grip on this country. They want to rule the world... simple as that. You idiots are allowing it.

Let times get tough, and here's the whining Liberal refrain"See? We need more government. Big government that's the solution. More government, more entitlementsGovernment is the answer; heartless conservatives are the problem!" I swear, it's a broken record! You side creates not one, but a couple of generations, with an entitlement mentality, so you can create an ever bigger and more oppressive nanny welfare state. A lot of these kids have No initiative-zip, zilch, zero, NONE! You made 'em, you live with them, democrats! Half these idiots spend more on their cell phone bill and social life than they do on groceries; of course they leach off mom and dad-if you let them. Big government and binging on credit created this economy. Now it's tough. Boo hoo. Adversity builds character, remember? Let 'em ditch the cell phone, the stereo, and the car for a while, and get some calluses on those dainty, soft little hands. I've dug ditches, so can they. Anyone remember the "malaise" and "stagflation" of the seventies? Remember when all Carter had to offer was hardship? I do.

Drinking Bong Water clearly doesn't agree with you.

Maybe you should read this whole thread before you go off on your rant about what 'liberals' think.

Most people agreed with me (a so called 'lib') that kids are lazy and think they are entitled to something without having to work hard for it. A lot of kids have no work ethic anymore. That's not a political thing, that's something learned from your parents. If they don't teach it to their kids, the kids are most likely not going to learn it.

Working for what you want/need builds character.

They have a good work ethic but aren't working....

The problem is obvious. They are waiting for others to give them jobs. They need to get off their ass and create their own jobs.

Yeah, this generation is lost. We expect everyone else to give us what we want. But things are going to change soon and this generation will have to rise to the occasion or die.

So you going to help them or you going to cause the death part?

RW, I believe how these kids turn out, well or poorly, depends entirely on the parenting they got. The decisions and choices about their education or choosing the military too; people coming out of the military, if they were in combat, may suffer from other anxieties that make fitting in a little different for them. For them the change is drastic. For those who never served it's all about expectations.
