Nixon was a moderate in many ways. He is often considered a transitional point in the Republican Party. Up until Nixon, Republicans were moderate and accepted many of the New Deal policies, yet still managed to practiced fiscal conservatism.

However, Nixon is when the neocons and movement conservatives started to hijack the GOP. In addition, the War on Drugs got its traction during the Nixon administration--a war based off of ignorance, paranoia, racism, and fear. Nixon compared the threat from marijuana, to that of “homosexuals, Jews and communists.”

He was definitely influenced by McCarthyism in that regard.

He was definitely influenced by McCarthyism in that regard.

Perhaps his incursions in Cambodia can be linked to McCarthyism, but is assault on marijuana was based on fear, paranoia, and ignorance. It is still a a schedule I drug to this day.
