Maybe that's because so much of it is driven by the producers; the Beatles would still be a garage band playing in crappy bars if George Martin hadn't polished them up and marketed them well. Same for bands like the Byrds, Grass Roots, etc. Producers like Terry Melcher and Graham Parsons and the lunatic Phil Spector built the business as it was then and producers still matter today; rap and hip hop is entirely producer driven, though still crap it's crap that sells, which is all rock, country, and pop are about. Some performers may be genuinely talented and trained musicians, but those aren't a requirement for success.
