This is just the four disastrous years of his presidency - his screwups after leaving office I leave for another thread.

Carter was the worst US president in history, a record which stood till 2008.

The Carter chronicles:

- Made BO look like a Talleyrand in the area of foreign policy by comparison: In 1977, he called the shah of iran "an island of stability" in the Middle East.

- Once reported that he sighted a UFO.

- Once beat off a "killer rabbit" that was "attacking" him in a boat.

- Gave away the Panama Canal.

- Tossed the Republic of China over the side, and recognized the PRC. US policy for many years, under democrat and republican presidents alike, had been recognition of the PRC in exchange for a non-aggression against the ROC pact. In return, he got from the PRC - nothing. Even the PRC dictators were startled.

- Hugely ramped up the modern era of "affirmative action".

- Was the first US president to support the Abortion Holocaust.

- Abandoned the pro-US rebels in Angola to the communist dictators and soviet proxy army of cubans.

- Unilaterally withdrew all but a token force of US military from our south korean allies, who faced one of the world's most formidable armies.

- Bailed out the anachronistic chrysler corporation.

- Presided over huge interest rates and inflation.

- Signed the camp david accords, resulting in the assassination of president anwar sadat, and the birth of the modern islamofascist movement.

- Signed a nuclear weapons treaty (SALT II) so unfavorable to the US, that even his own leftwing congress refused to ratify it.

- Botched the iranian hostage rescue.

- Responded to the soviet invasion of afghanistan by boycotting the 1980 Moscow olympics. THAT fixed 'em!

- Lost re-election to Reagan in one of the biggest landslides in history.

You know, I swore that my first post here would not be political, but when I see the name Jimmy Carter I can't help myself.

I'm a little tired right now, so the only thing I can add is that he skeletonized the military while the Cold War was still very much in full swing. I'm sure there is more, but I'll need sleep first.

Begin also signed those Accords and I wouldn't label him the worst PM in Israeli history. I give Carter credit for trying to fix Kissinger et al.'s mess, but it stops there. What he did right before was terrible, trying to undermine Begin's power in his talks with Sadat (sound familiar?) and because of JC, America has lost the conservative Israeli bloc's trust for all of eternity. After David I and II, all Israel knows is peace treaties = violence and assassinations. And land loss.

Apparently the current President thinks he can strongarm a two-time PM into coughing up more territory against his will.

I also agree re: Angola. But I blame most of the West for Angola/DRC/etc.'s violence in the 60s-70s. When will the West realize that socialist ideals are only natural following colonialism?

As far as Carter's domestic policies, I can't think of anything that irks me.

I got a kick out of the juxtaposition of pictures of Barack and Benjamin as young men. Those pictures speak volumes about each of them.

You've got to know that secretly Netanyahu thinks Obama is the biggest mama's boy on the planet.

CP: Presumably you care whether Israel is annihilated, and you expect not to be discriminated against in favor of a minority when you apply for job. Yet you support the leftwing. Maybe it's the inconsistencies of the female brain?

Some days, it seems more christian fundamentalists are concerned with israel's welfare than american jews.

Christian fundamentalists have their own agenda regarding the Jews. Some others I agree are more concerned about Israel than American Jews.

American Jews are concerned about Israel. They're also rather level-headed and hesitant to conform to 'Jews control the world' stereotypes.

Obama is a new thing to American Jews. The last openly hostile president we've seen is...Reagan, maybe?

Wrong. American Jews are more concerned with Obama, thus he must see something they don't. They are leaving Israel open to occupation and refuse to look at the problem. Iran is likely to unleash untold horror, to the applause of Europe and Asia.

What's that supposed to mean? Fundamentalists correctly see judaism as the wellspring of their own religion, and are concerned that a tiny democratic country that is surrounded by about a dozen countries, most living with a 7th century mentality, who want nothing other to cut the israelis throats.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttt???????? :D

The anti-Reagan defamations get more absurd all the time.

Carter faced the same opposition Clinton, and now Obama face from the right, and from corporate sponsored right wing think tanks and big money conservatives. Carter inherited serious stagflation from Nixon/Ford and on top that an oil embargo. It is getting harder today to fault democratic presidents as the power of money since FDR manages a message that many believe in spite of contrary information. Americans have lost faith in their system of government as they fight each other and the fox steals the chickens under their noses. I consider Reagan our worst contemporary president as he started the decline of America's middle class through his policies and through ideas that made the few devices that can protect workers the enemy, namely unions and government.

Reagan's record: RVC--Graphs

I do give Reagan credit for raising taxes many times, and in a bipartisan manner helping social security. http://www.usmessageboard.com/education/126617-reagan-and-taxes.html

"....there's a growing realization that the starting point for many of the catastrophes confronting the United States today can be traced to Reagan's presidency. There's also a grudging reassessment that the "failed"- presidents of the 1970s--Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter--may deserve more credit for trying to grapple with the problems that now beset the country." From the 1930s onward, the author argues, they provided the money, organization and fervor for a decades-long war against New Deal liberalism—funding campaigns, think tanks, magazines and lobbying groups, and indoctrinating employees in the virtues of unfettered capitalism."

I don't recall Reagan being openly hostile to jews and I don't think the president is "openly hostile" to jews. Do you really think anything was more "openly hostile" than asking Israel to take SCUD missiles for us... without retaliating against the people who sent those missiles? How about pushing for elections in Gaza and allowing Hamas to take power? Sometimes you need to look at actions... and not look for glowing words... but things that are in the best interests of our friends.

Not that I care about Carter...

But he didn't "give" the canal back.

TR had us build it and signed up for it to be ours for so much time, that time was up.

Carter properly kept our word.

After that, it's all down hill.
