I would not compare Clapton with Santana. It's patently unfair to Carlos.

There is Hendrix and then there is the rest imho.

Hendrix did things with the guitar that no one had ever done before. Sounds came from him and astounded because you did not even know how they came from that guitar.
And when you really know how to play then you really know when something extra special is coming from 'in there'.

Hendrix had so much extra. He was so much and far ahead of any guitarist at that time that it's patently unfair to even place him in the showing.

yea that happens when you play all fucked up......reverb and distortion......he was the best at that easily.....but to throw up a really good guitar solo.....like so many other guys did.....i dont think so.....

I think what you are missing is the multi-layered playing Jimi could do that no one else could. He was very precise when he wanted to be (a trait that Clapton prided himself on)
but he could also do the reverb that everyone else was trying to learn how to do. The difference is Jimi didn't need to learn he just did it. It was an integral part of him.

What's cool is listening to him play an acoustic like this. No reverb, no feedback just ass kicking playing!

IMO the closest anyone ever came to Hendrix in depth of ability was Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Here he is doing justice to a couple of Hendrix tunes.
