Hello everybody,

as I will now go on my more or less well-deserved Christmas Holiday, I will stop posting till January 5th, 2010.

I promised my wife not to touch my Computer till then and I have also promised to switch off my mobile. A Silent Night, so to say.

I wish everybody Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

If you are not Christian or do not like Christmas, I wish you still to have a Merry Christmas.

Take care everybody - it´s a shitty world outside.

"Deutschland Uber Alles..."

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year all.
Here's to an excellent 2010. I don't know about you all but I hope to make it as positively eventful as possible.
Enough of dealing with lifes legacies. Time to forge ahead.

I hope you find a furry little tickle off joy under your Tannenbaum this year my Teutonic friend.

Happy New Year everybody !

It could only be better...

Phew ... where to start ?
First of all, thank you all for your Christmas Wishes, I hope yours was as good as mine.

And to the ones who passed -err- rather strange - X-Mas wishes, like the ones from Yukon:
Shove them.

regards

Just to get it settled once and for all:

Deutschland über alles is NOT a Nazi song.
The song was written 1841 to the tunes of Joseph Haydn´s "Emperor Quartet" and was then the anthem of Austria.

In 1841 the german poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote it while being on the island of Helgoland (then a german island ruled by the british)-

The full text is as follows:

Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt,
wenn es stets zu Schutz und Trutze
brüderlich zusammenhält.
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
von der Etsch bis an den Belt,

|: Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
über alles in der Welt! :|

Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world,
when always for protection
we stand together as brothers.
from the Meuse river (west of Germany) to the Nemen river (east of Poland),
from the Adige river (Italian border) to the Belt (the sea near Denmark).
|: Germany, Germany above all,
above anything in the world. :|

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
sollen in der Welt behalten
ihren alten schönen Klang,
uns zu edler Tat begeistern
unser ganzes Leben lang. -
|: Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang! :|

German women, German faithfulness,
German wine and German songs
should continue to get approval
all over the world,
and help us to do great work
all our life.
|: German women, German faithfulness,
German wine and German songs! :|

Third stanza - the German National Anthem
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
für das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach lasst uns alle streben
brüderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
sind des Glückes Unterpfand;
|: blüh im Glanze dieses Glückes,
blühe, deutsches Vaterland. :|

Unity and justice and freedom
for the German Fatherland;
Let us all find these
as brothers, with heart and hand.
Unity and justice and freedom
are the way to happiness.
|: flourish in this wish,
Do well, German fatherland. :|

If your german is as crappy as your knowledge of our history, dear Yukon, you will miss the beauty and soulfulness of this poem.

In the context of it´s time, it was the expression of the fullhearted wish to unite Germany (which was a collection of small Kingdoms, princedoms and city states then) in freedom.
It is the expression of a wish, a hope.
1921 the first republic finally made this it´s anthem.

After 1933 it was still in use by the Nazis, but then followed by the Nazi-Song "Horst-Wessel-Lied". So most people connect "Deutschland über alles" with Nazism.

When West-Germany debated , after becoming the second democratic state on german soil, about an anthem, the then Federal President, as Head of State decided, that "The Song of the Germans" is and will be the anthem, but now only the third stanza will be in use.
So, I can not see how "Unity and Justice and Freedom" can be wrong.
