Bloomberg soda ban: Board of Health eyes popcorn and milkshakes

6/13/12 By Michelle Castillo

(CBS News) While the New York City Board of Health approves of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to cut all large sugary drinks from New Yorker's diets, some members are taking issue with one major point: They don't think the plan goes far enough.

As HealthPop previously reported, Bloomberg has proposed a ban of all sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces throughout the city's restaurants, street carts and stadiums. Only grocery stores and convenience stores would be exempt, as well as drinks that natural fruit juices and drinks with over 50 percent milk. This means while a Big Gulp would still be allowed to be sold at 7-11s, but movie theaters will have to get rid of their larger options. Those businesses who do not comply would face $200 fines.

The 11-member health panel met on Tuesday in Queens and approved the plan. A public hearing on the issue on July 24, with a final vote is scheduled for Sept. 13. If approved, the new regulations would go in effect on March 2013.

Interesting, the rule that states that parents must pack a healthy lunch really wasn't the problem in this case. The problem was the moron that decided the lunch wasn't healthy enough when in fact it was. So that clown should be reprimanded and that should be the end of it.

One of the biggest problems when government creates rules and regulations is that even when they make sense, all too often they have idiots overseeing them. It's a bit like cases with children and family services. One case worker will pull a child from their home because the case worker thinks the kid is being abused, when in fact, a little bit of research would prove the kid is just a klutz. On the other hand, we see time and time again when case workers are blind to real abuse and do nothing, and next thing the kid is dead because the case worker failed to do his/her job. So in many of these cases, it's not the rules or regulations that are so horrible; it's the people who are responsible for making running these programs that become the problem.

Michelle Obama: “Eat Less and Send Me the Money”

Posted by Daniel Greenfield
Sep 7th, 2012

Marie Antoinette, you have officially met your match. From now on the phrase is no longer, “Let them eat cake” will be replaced by,”Don’t let them eat cake so they can give me more money.”

After shaking down young couples for their wedding presents, the nation’s Foodmaster-General is literally taking the food out of the mouths of families so her husband can get another four years of playing golf and empowering the Muslim Brotherhood.

“A woman recently told the campaign her family skipped a pizza dinner at their favorite place so that they could make a difference in this election. That is the commitment that drives this campaign.”

The good news is that Michelle Obama has finally found a way to combine her hatred of other people eating with her love of getting a second term.

Mika Brzezinski’s bizarre soda ban rant: Sugar is poison!

Glenn Beck
3/12/13

New York City. The day after the soda ban failed. Chaos. Anarchy.

Well, that’s the story you would have gotten if you tuned into MSNBC’s Morning Joe today and listened to the inane rantings of progressive host Mika Brzezinski. She even had the gall to look her through the camera at her audience and tell them they should be mad at themselves for continuing to buy the “poison” that is sugary drinks.

“Be mad at the fact that you buy this stuff, again and again and again, and these companies feel they have to produce poison for your and your children,” she said on air.

Glenn could not believe her comments, and pointed out that the real solutions to obesity are only going to be found by individuals taking responsibility for their own health.

Piers Morgan: Clearly, People Can’t Be Trusted to Make Their Own Dietary Decisions

“Clearly, people can't be trusted to stop it themselves.”

12.3.2013 |Bradford Thomas

On Piers Morgan Live Tuesday, Piers Morgan applauded Michael Bloomberg’s unconstitutional attempt to ban sodas and declared that “clearly, people can’t be trusted” to make their own dietary decisions.

Morgan's primetime show Tuesday was dedicated entirely to America’s escalating obesity epidemic. Over the course of the hour, Morgan invited on a series of guests—from chefs, to Subway’s Jared, to buff exercise gurus—to discuss an increasingly supersized America.

During a segment with Joseph J. Colella, M.D., and New York Times reporter Michal Moss, Morgan turned the conversation to former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large sodas. Morgan doubled down on his support for Bloomberg’s ill-conceived and unconstitutional attempt to take away New Yorkers’ ability to choose their own drink sizes—and revealed just how deep his statism goes.

Food police not far off

Picture yourself in the future, the not too distant future, on a bright summer day. You are grilling hot dogs at a picnic with your family in a park. You pay little attention to the drone flying overhead. It’s probably a UPS or FedEx drone making a package delivery. But it’s not. It’s the food police and they are monitoring the items you brought to the picnic. The hot dogs, buns, potato chips and soda pop exceed your family’s maximum caloric allowance for the day. Besides, non-diet soda pop has been completely outlawed because it contains sweetener. You are in trouble with the food police.

If that Orwellian view of the future sends chills down your spine maybe it should, because it is not far-fetched at all. Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, already tried to limit the sales of soft drinks. Some said he did it to enhance his image as he left office. Whatever the reason, it didn’t work. The Supreme Court of New York blocked his efforts, calling the limits on soft drinks “arbitrary and capricious.”

The mayor vowed to appeal the ruling. He did, and he lost again. Had the rules taken effect, they would have limited the size of sugary drinks to 16 oz. at restaurants, theaters and food carts. What’s interesting to note is what the first court said about the sugar rule.

The food police we all had to deal with growing up were mom and dad. We don’t need to turn more parenting over to government. There are many ways of attacking obesity without trying to outlaw it in some fashion. Farmers and ranchers are entirely supportive of healthy lifestyles, and the right of the public to choose from the variety and abundance of nutritious foods.

When does a school have the right to tell a student what they will or won't eat????

If someone wants to send their kid to school with a LEGAL FOOD ITEM like pizza, hot dog, cheeseburger, etc then some shitstain teacher, food worker, etc has no right to steal that food, touch that food, breathe on that food, etc.

If fact, a school worker should be arrested for tampering with some student's food with the belief that school worker could add something dangerous to the food if allowed to mess with it.

I wonder how many threads will be started about this before the week's out.

Damn, it's frustrating that no liberals actually comment on the substance and instead keeping insulting posters. Are drive-by posts the best we can expect?

Are you okay with schools overruling parents and forcing kids to eat their lunches? I suppose if you're a member of one of the unions that benefit from this, you wouldn't care, but if it was your kid, would you be pissed?
