The Failure of Reason

The Age of Enlightenment (also known as the Age of Reason or simply the Enlightenment) was an intellectual and philosophical movement that dominated the world of ideas in Europe during the 18th century.

I recognized long ago that everything must be told....taught....to you government school grads at least three time.

The problem is that knowledge not based on values and morality leads to the Liberal/Progressive views found in not just most professors, but on these highly educated folks: Lenin, Pol Pot, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Bashar al-Assad, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Reinhard Heydrich, Radovan Karadzic, and Mohamed Atta.

Sooo.....you believe (I almost said 'think') that these folks are 'enlightened'?????

6. Know why man is called ‘Homo sapien’…’man the wise’? Because man chose the designation…..who’d be ‘the wise’ if orangutans designed the scheme? Same is true for those who call themselves descendants of ‘the Enlightenment’…they’re designate ‘enlightened,’ while any who disagree are ‘rubes’ or ‘deplorables.’

7. “So why give the Enlightenment all the credit? Apparently because it doesn’t look good to admit that the best and most important parts of modernity were given to us by individuals who nearly all held conservative religious and political beliefs.

The claim that all good things come from the Enlightenment is most closely associated with the late-18th-century German philosopher, Immanuel Kant. For Kant, reason is universal, infallible, and independent of experience.

His extraordinarily dogmatic philosophy insisted that there can be only one correct answer to every question in science, morality and politics. And that to reach the one correct answer, mankind had to free itself from the chains of the past—that is, from history, tradition and experience.” What Was the Enlightenment?

…and from religion.

The story teller tells us philosophy, one of the mainstays of the enlightenment is bad, is that because he wants the US Conservatives to keep funding Israel?

The Shalem Center was established in 1994 by the young American Jewish scholar Yoram Hazony as a think tank “intended to confront what he saw as the dangers posed by post-Zionism”, financed by conservative funders in the USA. Hazony had served as Benjamin Netanyahu’s ghost writer and was one of his advisers.[2]

In March 2009, the Shalem Center filed an application with the Council for Higher Education in Israel for the opening of an institution of higher learning that would be authorized to grant B.A. degrees in the liberal arts.[3] Noted scholar of the Middle East Martin Kramer has been chosen to serve as the first president of Shalem College, slated to open in the fall of 2013.

Shalem's research programs supported scholarship in the areas of philosophy, political theory, Jewish and Zionist history, Bible and Talmud, Middle East Studies, archaeology, economics, and strategic studies. Shalem was also home to Shalem Press, one of Israel's leading academic publishing houses. The press specializes in the translation into Hebrew of classic and modern works of Western philosophy. The Center also conducted educational programs at the post-doctoral, undergraduate, and high-school levels for students from Israel and abroad.[1]

The newly created Shalem College will offer an Israeli B.A. modeled on the American liberal-arts degree. Top Israeli and overseas applicants will pursue a unique core curriculum, combining the study of the great texts of Western and Jewish thought. Students will choose a major at the end of their first year. Initially, the college will offer two majors: Middle East and Islamic studies, and an interdisciplinary program in philosophy and Jewish thought.

I have to ask you, does he want Israel to be a theocracy, run by Judaism religion. I don't think so, by the sounds of it, he just wants to keep funding coming to Israel is my best guess.

And?

What is a jewish man who lives in Israel have anything to do the US. Funding I assume.

Your response to the posts that brought you slithering in is to point to the individual providing the input because the input itself is irrefutable?

Now....isn't that an admission of what I've always said about your sort?

No he wasn't.
Yeah, he was- you're revisionist crap doesn't speak well to your revisionist crap- he believed in Nature's God- not a man made pie in the sky authority- SMH-

Yet that isn't what he said, is it.

Once again, your indoctrination has proven to be indelible....or, to put it another way, one can't teach new tricks to old dogs.

Now......roll over! Play dead!
Doggie treat?

8.Three millennia ago, due to the start of monotheism, humanity began to construct the ‘house’ we live in today, the palace known as Western Civilization. Genesis 1:26 suddenly made every individual special, and made the argument against slavery.
In 1215, the Magna Carta underscored the premise with this language:
“Know ye, that we, in the presence of God, and for the salvation of our soul, and the souls of all our ancestors and heirs,….”
1215: Magna Carta - Online Library of Liberty

9. Reason has a place, and deserves credit for our place in history….but not to the exclusion of moral guidance.

We’ve built western civilization on two pillars: God created every human in His image and human beings are able to investigate and make rational conclusions about the world. These two ideas were born in Jerusalem and Athens, respectively.
“If you believe that government has no right to intrude upon the exercise of your individual will, that you have a moral duty to be virtuous, that human beings are capable of bettering the world through the use of reason, you are a product of Jerusalem and Athens.”
Ben Shapiro, “The Right Side Of History.”

10. The Enlightenment shattered the congruence of the two aspects, science and reason replacing religion and morality. There could only be one outcome, and Dostoyevsky recognized it. He saw that reason and science were being touted as the only guides that mankind needed….and he didn’t accept same.
“Human beings are creatures that seek more than which reason and science purport to give them- and they are more than the self-interested animals reason and science seek to make them. ….freed from moral responsibility….[they] would burst forth in a conflagration that will set the whole world on fire, Dostoyevsky predicted.

11. “Human reason, when cut loose from the constraints imposed by history, tradition and experience, produces a lot of crazy notions.

The abstract Enlightenment philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau is a good example. It quickly pulled down the French state, leading to the French Revolution, the Reign of Terror, and the Napoleonic Wars. Millions died as Napoleon’s armies sought to rebuild every government in Europe in light of the one correct political theory he believed was permitted by Enlightenment philosophy.

Today’s cheerleaders for the Enlightenment tend to skip this part of the story. They also pass over the fact that the father of communism, Karl Marx, saw himself as promoting universal reason as well. His new “science” of economics ended up killing tens of millions of people in the 20th century. So did the supposedly scientific race theories of the Nazis.

The greatest catastrophes of modernity were engineered by individuals who claimed to be exercising reason.” Prager U, Op.Cit.

The Enlightenment resulted in guidance via science and reason.....to the exclusion of religion and morality.
It was a grave error.

12. “Science can exist without faith; science tells us what we can do….not what we should do.

Morality requires faith, and religion. The statement that it is better to love the poor than to exterminate the poor is a statement of faith. It's not a scientific truism. Scientifically, it is better to shoot infirm people, as Hitler did. Prior to the Jews, Hitler began with the physically impaired. That is a rational thing to do. Nature does it.

It's a leap of faith to say the meek shall be treated decently, because in all of the world, only people do that - and nor many do - but certainly nothing in nature does. The meek are eaten in the rest of nature. Why shouldn't we emulate nature? Morality.

Maybe humanity really doesn't need to hold that there's a transcendent source for right and wrong. Maybe we're so wonderful a species that we can do it without any reference to something above us. But after the Holocaust and Gulag, I find that to be very, very unrealistic.

If there is no God, there is no good or evil; they are still left to our reason, our subjective opinion and our cultural experience.

Imagine watching an urban riot with your child, and you ask: “would you loot if you could get away with it?" A child watching all these people raking all the things he'd like - color TVs, Reeboks, and they were not only getting away with it, they were smiling for the cameras. And your child says, "No." "Why?" And he said, "Because it's in the Ten Commandments.” That's the answer a religious parent wants to hear.”
Dennis Prager

13. “…most of the progress [Western Civilization has] made comes from conservative traditions openly skeptical of human reason. The Enlightenment’s critics, including John Selden, David Hume, Adam Smith, and Edmund Burke, emphasized the unreliability of “abstract reasoning” and urged us to stick close to custom, history, and experience in all things.

Which brings us to the heart of what’s wrong with today’s idolization of the Enlightenment. Its leading figures were not skeptics open to what history and experience might teach us.

Their aim was to create their own system of supposedly infallible truths independent of experience. And in that pursuit, they were as rigid as the most dogmatic medievals.

Anglo-Scottish conservatives had a very different goal. They defended national and religious tradition, even as they cultivated what they called a “moderate skepticism”—a combination that became known as “common sense.” What Was the Enlightenment?

From the start, there are certain professions that are granted immediate status:

“So…you’re a professor?? Wow! You must be really smart!”

Wrong.

The fact is, Leftists have taken over the school system, including the universities., and the more time one has spent in university, the less wise one is. Particularly if one is a professor. While this may not be true in the hard sciences and mathematics, the ratio of Democrat professors to Republican in these areas is telling, and consequential:

History 17.1 to 1

Biology 20.8 to 1

Environmental 25.3 to 1

Sociology 43.8 to 1

Communications 108 to zero. 39% of "elite" liberal arts colleges have 0 registered Republican professors - as in NONE

4. Western Civilization, it is claimed by many educated folks, has progressed to this level by instituting reason and science in place of experience and religion. The view is traced to the virtue-signaling title, “the Enlightenment.”

5. “Modern science, medicine, political freedom, the market economy—all of them, we’re told, are the result of a sort of miracle that took place 250 years ago. That miracle is called the Enlightenment, a moment in history when philosophers suddenly overthrew religious dogma and tradition and replaced it with human reason. Harvard professor Steven Pinker puts it this way: “Progress is a gift of the ideals of the Enlightenment.” What Was the Enlightenment?

Not only is that view false, and dangerous- over 100 million slaughtered in its wake in the last century alone, - but it leads to Rousseau’s view that those who do not agree with the ‘reason’ provided by ‘educated folks,’ should be marginalized, or exiled…..or killed.
"If the French revolution was the end of monarchy and aristocratic privilege and the emergence of the common man and democratic rights, it was also the beginnings of modern totalitarian government and large-scale executions of "enemies of the People" by impersonal government entities (Robespierre's "Committee of Public Safety"). This legacy would not reach its fullest bloom until the tragic arrival of the German Nazis and Soviet and Chinese communists of the 20th century."

Wow, those statistics are VERY telling. It's no wonder college kids aren't learning anything useful.

Yup.....it's the reason that I believe that there is no future for this nation unless we can cancel the Liberal occupation of the education industry.

"Reason" and "science" aren't even the same thing, as uneducated people, such as the majority of atheists falsely assert in their childish pop slogans.

"Science", as in Francis' Bacon's method, is based on induction, or "nature", while "reason" or "rationality" is based on "deduction".

It's more or less well-understood by thinking men and women anyway that people, for the most part don't act completely "rational", except in pure abstraction or speculations (this is what the Common Law is based on, for example, in how it doesn't "crimes of passion", or committed while in the heat of the moment, from "premeditated" or rational crimes).

More often than not, many if not most people act highly "irrational", just as a blind "faith" in "reason" in a vaccum is in itself, not "rational" but faith-based circular logic; even during the "Enlightenment", not all human comprehension was reduced solely to "reason", it just being one of many was of comprehending things, along with emotions, intuitions, and so forth.
