The End of the Internet? Cybersecurity Act gives Obama power to shut down internet, i

A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes.

Can someone explain this in more detail please?

Sever ties with Microsoft, dissolve the contracts, and stop pushing more censorship. Basically, another example of Americans who are now too damned stupid to protect themselves. If it's true, then it pure evil.

Did you read the bill? It's an actual bill that's been put in to committee. We need to scream that this bill be stopped. Only way they will hear us is by flooding their email and calling. We can't let this bill move.

What, you think I've been in a rotten fucking mood lately because I don't believe you? Shit, the rumor itself is dangerous enough. Well, all the people screaming for the government to protect them and their children are getting what they fucking want. From having to rely on the government to tell them what's healthy to bleeping out "bad words" because the parents are too damned lazy to pay attention to what their kids are watching or take them to the park. From banning certain books in the public library just because they are "offensive" to filtering any website that mentions anything about sex even if it's actually a health or informational website. *eye roll* Censoring jokes just because they "offend" someone to getting all irate for comments from a shock jock. Hell no, you think it ever stops, it doesn't, and if anyone thinks it's impossible to implement, here's news for you, you can't view most websites in many countries unless they are approved by their government, THAT'S our future if it doesn't all fucking stop now! Tell them more than just to stop this, tell them "NO MORE CENSORING LIFE!" Are we Americans, or are we fucking Nazis?

Reading through the full text, I find this,

- The President--
(1) shall appoint as members of the panel representatives of industry, academic, non-profit organizations, interest groups and advocacy organizations, and State and local governments who are qualified to provide advice and information on cybersecurity research, development, demonstrations, education, technology transfer, commercial application, or societal and civil liberty concerns; and

(2) may seek and give consideration to recommendations from the Congress, industry, the cybersecurity community, the defense community, State and local governments, and other appropriate organizations.

To me, "interest groups and advocacy organizations" means "we know better than you and are here to protect you because you are an idiot that needs a nanny-state to take care of you".

The online FCC ... I will not tolerate it, plain and simple. This is the last truly free and open media venue, if they take it from us, there should be a fight to stop them. I am just sick of the whining from so many on the left and right, it's annoying me.

this seems to mostly be about the prevention of virus epidemics and infrastructure attacks. Unfortunately, it includes a rather dangerous provision in Sec 18 subsection 2 which reads:

The President-- [...] (2) may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network;

If they are allowed to remain Linux/Unix and the government dissolves the wasteful contracts with MS then goes Unix, there wouldn't be any issues with those and they know it, it's just an infringement, and excuse to push more government into our lives, and nothing more.

The government almost never fails to take advantage of it's dangerous over-reaching power whenever it can.
This will be no different. Those little clauses are put in there on purpose so they can take advantage of them later.

 Oh no! Not advice and information! Oh my!

None of it means anyone has the power to shut down the internet. :doubt:

I can't rep you again for a while.

But yeah, you know you've seen such on some websites, well, that's their right since they are privately owned. But come on, forcing people to make sure their users are "13+", "18+" was bad enough, that's the parents duty and the site owners should in no way be responsible for who logs on, that's just making other people do the babysitting. But yeah, imagine all the sites being forced to do that or they won't be allowed in the US ... F***ING H*** ... and if you don't think they will, the FCC wasn't originally created to bleep everything they decided was "foul language" either, they were just suppose to make sure the laws were followed.

It seems that's just for if a secured system, eg, the pentagon or banks get compromised by cyber attack.

It doesnt appear to be that nefarious...

Except section 12 subsection 2 very specifically gives that power to the president.

I like Obama, but I don't want him to have that power.

The power to protect ourselves?

The Patriot Act didn't appear very nefarious either now, did it?
