Nobody doubts they don't air some excellent programs. My problem has always been with the leftist slant and the constant begging for donations. If they're going to beg for money, let them be more competitive in what they air.

New York Times: Trump is proposing to “slash” areas such as public broadcasting, and how poor people will suffer as a result

And that is certainly an expected headline with more @ The End of Taxpayer-funded Public Broadcasting?

NPR is not slanted 'left'.

It's main critics are the Far Right of the centrist medium.

vvvv watch the usual suspects put up the funny emoticons  below

Easy to tell if someone does not and has not actually listened to NPR because they ALWAYS repeat the same tired lie that its liberal or "slanted left". In point of fact, they go out of their way to be neutral but rabid RWNJ traitors don't know that.

It would be a shame to lose NPR/PBS, especially since it costs so little and does so much good.

But hey, we still have tax payer funded religion.

"Leftiwingers can support things they like on their own."

Wrong the far left can fund it on their own they just want the tax payer to do it for them!

I don't get it. All broadcast stations are free in the area I live in. The exception would be Sirius satellite. Free broadcast tv for news. WTF we need taxpayer founded NPR for?

From what I've heard, FM radio is not cheap, and the FCC charges a lot of money for those channels, IIRC. Also, there's the cost of producing the shows, office space, staff, and other overhead.

While it may be free to the listener, FM radio isn't free to produce. The difference between NPR and other FM channels is other FM channels rely on paid commercials while NPR relies on government funding, listener support, and various donations/endowments from various trusts and corporations.

NPR and PBS's newshour are both completely unneeded. As well as both are heavily-heavily biased.
I would support total withdraw from both, but I believe non news related PBS should remain funded.

No politics allowed.
And I have the perfect format for them, they can pick up where the History Channel left off and actually report history.
Of course you'd have to keep an eye on em so they dont try and pass off revisionist history like dems are wont to do.

"Leftiwingers can support things they like on their own."

Wrong the far left can fund it on their own they just want the tax payer to do it for them!

They know how that'll turn out.
Air America comes to mind.

I do understand that. Local stations are existing on commercials. That's why I said there was Broadcast tv for news. There are AM stations also what are more news oriented, still existing on commercial sales. No need for NPR. It served its purpose, now it is time to wean it from the government teat.

Wrong again.

Look at the channels you get on your TV service. I have satellite and pay for literally dozens of religion networks. Also dozens of sports and kids networks.

I don't have a choice because its the only service I can get where I am.

Fact is, we all subsidize the thumpers and yet, the right wants to end NEUTRAL quality content.

The right's race to the bottom continues.

"Leftiwingers can support things they like on their own."

Wrong the far left can fund it on their own they just want the tax payer to do it for them!

You really are as dumb as a cardboard box.

Guess what?

The cheeto had nothing at all to do with forcing us all to pay for religion crap on TV.

How the hell could you believe he does?

(But, with his constant attacks on the US Constitution, he would sure be in favor of it.)

Edited to add - look at the two dummies who agree with you. longknife and defcon4 Not surprising at all.

When NPR was created, there were THREE (3) television networks. There was concern that, with all three funded by commercial interests, objective news sources might not be available.

Hence, even ignoring the glaring unconstitutionality of it all, their reason for existence is no more.

De-fund them. Let them survive on donations AND COMMERCIALS.

I enjoyed listening to NPR interviews of common folks during and after the political campaign. It was a pleasure to hear those on both sides be given respect during interviews, and I appreciated that Trump supporters were given respect and the opportunity to speak their mind without the interviewer interrupting and challenging their every thought. As for public funding, I'm not sad to see it end. I think there'll be enough private support to sustain it but if not then I'll look at it as we don't deserve it.
