Does sports make us juvenile?

A group of friends joined together to cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles (NFL) tackling the Seattle Seahawks on the first December weekend of the 52nd NFL season. These friends were college-buddies (all attended Penn State) and wanted the Eagles to continue their current season dominance by making a loud statement and pouncing on the Seahawks. Everyone thought that the dominating New England Patriots (undoubtedly the team of the first two decades of the new millennium) would find a way (under the invincible-leadership of QB Tom Brady) to break the Eagles' hearts in the Super Bowl (as they had already done before!). The Patriots also handed the Seahawks and heart-breaking Super Bowl loss. Nevertheless, Eagles fans were very very very excited, so there was a great deal at stake.

The Penn State alumni-buddies watching the game were Steve (an economics major), Diane (a history major), Phil (a psychology major), Sheryl (a literature major), and Terry (a sociology major). Each person had a different perspective on why the Eagles should pounce on the Seahawks in this first December weekend of NFL Season 52. Terry believed that Philly-fans would be more 'invigorated' going into the playoffs; Steve thought a loud Eagles victory would stamp the team as the formidable rival of the Patriots; Phil thought that an Eagles win over the Seahawks would make Philly-fans more energized about the Super Bowl. Phil and Steve made a side-wager --- if the Eagles won, Phil would owe Steve an order of Chicken McNuggets, but Steve would owe Phil if the Eagles lost!

Steve won the wager, since the Eagles defeated the Seahawks that day by a score of 35-20, and Philly-fans across the city were thrilled! Phil purchased Steve an order of delicious Chicken McNuggets. The Penn State buddies parted ways and thanked each other for a terrific game-watching experience on NFL Sunday. However, Steve went home and started going insane. He decided that he was completely obsessed now with the Philadelphia Eagles and would spend hours on end in his bedroom playing 21 with his deck of cards, seeing how many hands he could play to match/predict real-life Eagles scores. Steve got at least 2 hands accurate each night he played in his bedroom. Steve became the ultimate 'American Fanatic.'
