The dreaded gay-wedding-cake saga ends: bakers must pay 135 K

"Within Oregon's public accommodations law is the basic principle of human decency that every person, regardless of their sexual orientation, has the freedom to fully participate in society. The ability to enter public places, to shop, to dine, to move about unfettered by bigotry."
So what do you think about wal mart not baking a rebel flag cake?
Racism is not a protected class
Neither is liberal hate.

Time to appeal to the courts,

exactly, is there a law there that says "must" or "shall" bake ?

and why are they not protected against such stupid actions by the
Fourteenth Amendment ? in addition, it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law"

A phrase in the Fourteenth Amendment to the UnitedStates Constitution requiring that states guarantee thesame rights, privileges, and protections to all citizens. This doctrine reinforces that of due process of law and prevents states from passing or enforcing laws that arbitrarily discriminate against anyone.

can anyone right or left explain why those fags were given $135,000.00 by a discriminating court ?

Does the GLOATING ever stop with these people? having a Government FINE SOMEONE for not BAKING a cake and these people see nothing wrong with this.

that's fascism and Oppression of our Freedoms all over a gawddamn CAKE

JUST call us the USSR
There is no more USSR. This would never happen in Russia. Russians enjoy more freedom than we do. A Christian baker would never be fined for being a Christian.

135k is pretty steep fine for bigotry

Shouldn't it max out around 10k per 'simple' incident?

That is what the jury decides. Damages in a case like this are the "pain and suffering" and punitive categories. Thus, they are open to wide interpretation, limited by little more than a lawyer's ability to spin a narrative and invoke a comparison to a jury.

"A lifetime loving commitment by two people, and the life long dignity of two human beings. How much is desecrating that worth? How can we quantify the damage done? Isn't one year in a bakery worth two lifetimes of loving commitment?"

And boom, the jury suddenly finds it reasonable.

What a sick, abusive, and scary mindset you have. Any decent, normal couple would have simply found another baker if they discovered that the first baker would find it offensive to make their wedding cake. No normal couple would have even considered filing a complaint against the first baker, much less trying to get him fined.

"If you're not gay, gay marriage won't affect you! So what do you care if gays get married?" Remember that argument?

Now we see gay rights nazis using gay marriage to punish any vendor who dares to decline to service their wedding on religious grounds.

Do you understand what "due process of law" means?

If not baking a cake hurt their relationship[ they had a very piss poor relationship. If it hurt their feelings they don't have a backbone. This kind of bullshit helps turn people into spineless butthurt jello. Where are the Christians' rights? You lose your rights when you open a business? The judge needs to be thrown off the bench and the people need to shitcan all the legislators that made this kind of tyranny possible.

Opposition might have to be from a different angle. Provide the service, then the florist, baker, venue provider, photographer, anyone who objects have a protest at the actual wedding itself. There are paid protesters who will show up for a few bucks. Westboro would show up for free. It's not only a matter of being forced to provide services against your will. It's a matter of making them stop asking in the first place.

There is no such thing as a gay wedding cake. Only gay customers

I am merely pointing out the ways in which lawyers generate these kinds of judgements. The religious rights of the owners vs the PA laws is a question of law which the jury will not be engaged in deciding. The judge first has to decide whether the owners alleged actions would be a violation of the PA laws. If yes, the jury will then decide whether the alleged actions actually occurred. If yes, the jury will then decide how much to award for "pain and suffering" and for punitive damages. Lawyers seek the biggest possible award through a combination of evoking emotions, and drawing comparisons.

Sweet Cakes final order Gresham bakery must pay 135 000 for denying service to same-sex couple OregonLive.com

Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian on Thursday ordered the owners of a former Gresham bakery to pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple for refusing to make them a wedding cake.

Avakian's ruling upheld a preliminary finding earlier this year that the owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa had discriminated against the women on the basis of their sexual orientation.

Bakery owners Melissa and Aaron Klein cited their Christian beliefs against same-sex marriage in denying service. The case ignited a long-running skirmish in the nation's culture wars, pitting civil rights advocates against religious freedom proponents who argued business owners should have the right to refuse services for gay and lesbian weddings.

Avakian's final order makes clear that serving potential customers equally trumps the Kleins' religious beliefs. Under Oregon law, businesses cannot discriminate or refuse service based on sexual orientation, just as they cannot turn customers away because of race, sex, disability, age or religion, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries said in a news release.

"This case is not about a wedding cake or a marriage," Avakian wrote. "It is about a business's refusal to serve someone because of their sexual orientation. Under Oregon law, that is illegal.

"Within Oregon's public accommodations law is the basic principle of human decency that every person, regardless of their sexual orientation, has the freedom to fully participate in society. The ability to enter public places, to shop, to dine, to move about unfettered by bigotry."

So, when do the cries of evil, evil, evil ZOG persecution begin?
And when will this all be Obama's fault?
And when does the GoFundMe account go up?
Anyone know how much delicious icing 135 K can buy?

No mudslinging, folks! But you may throw delicious icing. :D

And when they come for you, Statisticalangst, who will you turn to?

"First they came ..." is a famous statement and provocative poem written by Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group.

this kind of stuff help people reject homosexuals period. If they(homosexuals) don't start standing up for OTHERS in these witch hunts. Then they only have themselves to blame for the hate that people will have against them. It's sad but a fact of life. they can't keep pushing themselves off on the people in the country. They like Black people, they are being USED by others and should wake up to it.

Simple formula,

if your love of baking cakes doesn't exceed your hatred of gays, get out of the cake business.
Nice way to sugar coat disregarding other peoples beliefs..........

Obey............or else and say you are for Freedom......
This case needs to go to the Supremes.........

They may end up owing 500,000 if it does and the supremes may throw them in jail.

Hey, I am a Christian and I can tell people who are divorced and adulterers would also have to be treated the same as gay people...

So where have they show their tolerance to people those people..

And most of the money goes in their pockets. Assuming they can collect but chances are these people don't have it. They'll probably file bankruptcy and no one really wins.

Hey cowpoke, if the adulterers asked them to bake a cake celebrating adultery do you think they would have made one?

Though they did break the law, I think the size of this fine is outrageous.
