The difference: Superstition & religion.

Religion is a group faith in a chosen god or gods.

Superstition is being afraid of black cats.
And what is the difference between being afraid of black cats and afraid of Satan? Some actually believe black cats are Satan in disguise.
Can we return to the meaning of ā€˜faithā€™ then and examine why thereā€™s any difference between believing Christ rose on the third day and walking under a ladder is bad luck. The number of believers who accept ladder theology could be described as a ā€˜group faithā€™. However, some who use the term ā€˜group faithā€™ simply mean a written formalised set of beliefs, that is, a theology. How though is that different from superstition?
ā€œNow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seenā€ Hebrews Ch:11.V 1.
Explain in DETAIL: how religion hurts you or someone believing in religion hurts you?

I am personally harmed by religion but my head isnā€™t squished in a vice or anything. Iā€™m just in a subculture that makes me feel trapped from pursuing my ambitions. My parents, kids, wife, siblings, cousins, friends and other family members are devoutly superstition or pretend to be at all cost. Leaving the religion would be an emotional nuclear bomb. Iā€™d lose everything. The harm is mostly psychological. The sociological forces weave a brilliant trap that is impossible to leave. Once God has you in His hands there is no way out, not even death. For the most part religion is harmless but it isnā€™t victimless as you imply.

No, you're supposed to explain the central distinction between superstition and religious belief, an accomplishment Iā€™ve yet to encounter here.

Yes. Religion and superstition are usually intertwined but donā€™t have to be. Thomas Jefferson created a version of the Bible that removed all superstitious elements. He loved the ethics and teachings of Christ but loathed the concept of miracles and other unfounded magic.

Example of religion: Be a positive influence and bring no harm to others.

Example of superstition: Be a positive influence and being no harm to others or a magic god in the sky will punish you.

The religion is how you live. The superstition is supposed to be elements that encourage you to follow through with your religious beliefs. The strong language of religious texts should be viewed as rhetoric with the agenda that emphasizes the importance of following the faith. Taking in literal is childish and irresponsible but very easy to do. Superstition and religion can be separated but it isnā€™t very common. Usually the superstition is used as reinforcement of the scriptural teachings .

At least a black kat exists. Is it evil or bad luck? Thatā€™s superstition. Religion is believing impossible things in exchange for the promise of heaven.
You must have attended an odd church.

You do realize how many members of your church donā€™t take the old and New Testament literally? Why isnā€™t there consensus on this? Why is it ok some people donā€™t literally believe Mary was a virgin who god impregnated? Was the faith lying all these years? They only recently admit those are allegories. For hundreds of years churches told the ignorant those were factual stories.

Isnā€™t that strange so many donā€™t really believe? And that number grows bigger each decade. So logically it seems like your religion is slowly being eliminated.

Do you think so many Christians in 1600 realized it was all allegories? Nope. Back then people believed the Bible was filled with facts. The others kept quiet. Only recently are people wising up. Youā€™d get killed for saying what I do now back then. By Christians no less.

Anyways my point is we see Christianity changing from fact to allegory. Unless we suffer a huge setback like we lose all our technology and have to start over, I donā€™t see people in the future passing on the Jesus religion. Itā€™s just another dying religion.

Will Islam and Mormons and Jews outlast Christians? Probably. We are smarter than the Middle East sheep and the Mormon cult is pretty powerful. The Bible Belt ainā€™t going anywhere soon either I guess.

Iā€™ll give you an example of the problem with religion. We all think gay sex is gross, unless itā€™s two hot girls of course but thatā€™s another conversation.

Anyways, if it werenā€™t for religion being gay would just be gross. But what does religion say? Itā€™s evil, a sin, an abomination, against gods law, unnatural.

Religion made things worse. Who are they to judge? Who said they are right? If they say god then theyā€™ll now have to prove he said it. Or even exists.

There has been and always will be a social standard. Sometimes religion holds the authority. Sometimes a king holds the authority. Sometimes the majority holds the authority. There will always be people killing other people over violating social norms. Humans increase their chances of survival and advancement when the herd is happy and healthy. Even in the Age of Enlightenment and freedom there are still things that you can do that will get you killed. Homosexual activity is always something the herd can easily identify as abnormal. The death of those practicing gay sex has little to do with religion and more to do with its obvious contrast to what is normal.

I like our secular laws. Sometimes I agree with conservatives when they say they want to execute murderers and rapists. Those damn liberals make us lock them up and feed them for the rest of their lives and they watch tv and play cards. If most American conservatives had their way weā€™d execute every last one of them. After we tortured them of course. Isnā€™t that Christianity?

Yes. Godā€™s perfect Law for Israel requires killing murderers and rapists. It also requires the killing of belligerent children. Imagine the victims you could protect by killing belligerent children before they get a chance to commit crimes. Just because the Bible has some good ideas doesnā€™t mean they should be quickly dismissed because they are from the Bible. Secular society can benefit from religious based laws as well.

Remember, the people who created religions were atheist. Many fail to see that, even though it should be obvious.
