"Legislation signed last year by Gov. Jerry Brown seeks to give California more electoral clout, however. The law is part of a multi-state effort to circumvent the Electoral College system, the United States’s electoral system that confers disproportionate power on sparsely-populated and swing states."

"The National Popular Vote law would give California’s 55 Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote. *Implementation relies on an “Interstate Compact” where states representing a majority of Electoral College votes, 270, must sign on in order for the agreement to take effect. If the movement succeeds, those states would wield enough power to ensure that the national popular vote winner becomes President.

Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, Washington state and Washington D.C have all signed on in addition to California, bringing the movement about halfway to its needed threshold."

What's the public law or bill number? I'd like to read it myself before accepting the authors characterization of it.

Never mind. Here it is and it's exactly what the author of that piece claimed:

WAIS Document Retrieval

It is not yet in effect, though, as it does not become effective until enough states to constitute a majority of the electoral votes have passed the same law.

I don't see how you can characterize it as a power or vote grab by Democrats, though, as it would apply equally to both parties, or any party which can win a majority of the votes nationwide.

It's the beginning of the end of the electoral college just as the democrats want. If all the states sign on to this we will never see another republican president.

Well....if the GOP can't garner a majority of the votes nationwide, they don't need to be considered a viable party anyhow...right?

Are they so out of touch with Joe American that they need "help" winning an election?

Do none of you people understand what you're promoting here? Pure democracy is 50%+1, or in plain English, mob rule. Is this REALLY what you think we should do? REALLY?

What you're pushing here is the end of 'representative democracy', where the rights of the minority are PROTECTED from usurpation by the mob.

Fucking MORONS!!!

I dont have a problem with this at all! That does not hurt one party more than the other.

Where is the cheating?

"The Framers of our Constitution invented a system that would establish a democracy while protecting minority rights. They created the Electoral College to protect the residents of the smaller states, and they rejected government by simple majority because plebiscites historically have been the tool of dictatorships, not democracy."

"The Electoral College, in practice, gives a little more electoral power to racial minorities, such as blacks and Hispanics, and thus is important in helping to achieve racial justice. Because these minorities tend to live in the large cities of the bigger states, their votes are important in tilting all the electoral votes of their state, thus encouraging candidates of both parties to appeal for their votes."

"A purely popular vote would encourage some states (particularly one-party states) to change their voting requirements to increase that state’s influence nationwide. For example, a state could drop the voting age to 17 or 16, because more people voting would allow that state affect the national vote, not just the electoral vote. Indeed, if a simple majority governed, both the candidates and the voters would have acted differently. Gov. Bush would have spent more time in Texas, racking up huge majorities, because an extra vote in Texas would counterbalance a Gore vote in California."

I'm not disagreeing with that, to a point, but you're trying to make the case that the law is somehow an example of the Democrats cheating.

I'd like for you to explain how that is.

So, TM and Oldguy want New York, California and Il. deciding the elections for them, I see.

We're fuckin' doomed if even 10% of the population thinks that this is a good idea....

I'd love to see Romney win the popular vote.

CA would blow itself up

No, I didn't say that. In fact, I'm not even debating the merits of the law at all. I'm waiting for the OP to explain how it's an example of Democrats "cheating."

After all, that IS the subject of the thread....right?

So these states are willing to cast their electoral votes for a candidate their people voted against?

Suppose Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, Washington state and Washington D.C all voted to reelect President obama, but Romney won the popular vote even though obama had a slight edge in the EC before counting theirs.
This law would make Mitt Romney POTUS against the wishes of their states.

Boy that looks like something ready to come back and bite them. Imagine CA goes for Obama but the popular vote goes to Romney. Won't the citizens of CA be pissed.
