Yes they did. And some conservative Republicans even broke ranks to help pass those laws, like the 24 that voted no on the 1964 Civil Rights law or the 3 Republicans that voted for the poll tax in Virginia. Some of the more left leaning Democrats voted against those laws.

Since it wasn't a 100% vs. 0% vote, should we then abandon both parties and force both to pay reparations I guess is the real question you are answering.

That's not what Al Sharpton says or any other prominent Black spokesman.
They all seem to be of the consensus that it's the GOP that is now the party of racism and intolerance, not the Democrats. That seemed especially true after the Democrats nominated and elected Barack Obama for two consecutive terms as POTUS.

lol really? So where did those Black Codes in every northern state except Massachusetts come from, Santa Claus? Lincoln himself lobbied for even stricter Black Codes in Illinois in the 1850's, northern armies shoved 'freed' blacks into 'property camps' and left hundreds of thousands of them to die rather than waste resources on them or let them go north, and ordered many of them to stay on their plantations and work for their new 'liberators' with no permission to leave, and after the war the vast majority stayed in the South for some reason nobody wants to talk about ...

Well they've always been the terrorist arm of the conservative far right. I mean they sided with the Dixiecrats who called themselves the Conservative Democrats. They opposed the Rockefeller Republicans who were the Liberal Republicans.

When a political party leaned more conservative, their candidates were the ones the Klan supported (unless they were Catholic, Jewish, etc).


Before the 80's whichever members were siding on the conservative side of the spectrum, that's who they supported for obvious reasons. Take Frank Appleby, they endorsed him, a Republican in a race in the 1920's because he was a Conservative Republican. Ben Paulen was a Republican Governor of Kansas in the 1920's that the Klan supported for his conservatism. The overwhelming majority of conservatism was in the Democratic party though, so they had the overwhelming support.

I mean you can read the Klans own book "The Klans fight for Americanism" from the 20's where it says "The Klan... makes no apologies for its members' attempts to impose their views upon "liberals," immigrants, Catholics, Jews, or peoples of color. Instead it sounds a clarion call for the Klan's "progressive conservatism" and celebrates its influence in American public life."
