The Debt Ceiling

Flopper shows an understanding few do.

I once again will say the budget was the chance to well, budget. This is an opportunity to grandstand and score a couple talking points but I hope the boys don't fool around too much.

Exactly. If Ryan and the dems can meet in the middle (Debt Commission) everyone wins. If they both fail to save the day, they will all most likely get replaced in 2012. We want fiscal sanity, not litmus-tests on ideology.
It only takes one Senator to filibusterer the debt limit bill to bring the economy down. I believe that in about 2 weeks we will see a bill from the House that raises the debt limit in the Senate, most probably with spending reduction attachments. The news media will surely see that the whole world is aware of the economic Domesday that awaits us if Congress does not act. Hopefully, they will move quickly, otherwise we may see wholesale dumping of US debt.

Wrong, the taxpayers are going to get screwed, anyway you look at it.

Liberal ideology is the exact opposite of fiscal sanity, so actually a litmus test is exactly what we need. If you test positive for liberalism, you're part of the problem, not the solution.

How about a 50% decrease in military spending?

That would save us about $400 Billion a year.

How about a 100% decrease in medicare? That will save $800 billion a year. Also cut the Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Commerce, Department of health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, Ethanol subsidies, crop subsidies, yada, yada, yada.

I will give you a 6% cut in patent office spending and a three percent in the rest. Inflation adjusted.

God. This is admitting our country is broke and the Chinese model will dominate the world for the next fifty years.

Me being conservative I am not for big radical changes which will cause disruptions and get folks in the streets protesting. That sort of thing makes socialist revolutions.

Your solution reminds me of the man who burnt his house down to save maintenance cost.

"I believe keeping our promises should be our highest priority and that means saving Social Security and Medicare while preserving the American dream for our children and grandchildren."

First of all, I am a conservative as well and do not want to see radical ideas being taken up all over America by the common citizen. This being said, our country is in dire financial shape and needs to have large, responsible changes, not radical. The size of the government needs to be reduced and the breaucracies need to be eliminated.

Part of our problem here is our willingness to say Oh poor us. Yes things aren't going how we invisioned but that doesn't give us an excuse to sit by and let the problems propagate. China's economy is expanding, but that doesn't mean that we should let it gain international influence and replace ours as a symbol for the world. We need to take a hard stand and fight for what has been established over 250 years.

We need to take responsibility for our actions, reduce the spending, balance the budget, cut the fat, establish a small, effective way of doing business, and push to achieve greatness once again. The American dream is not having the government provide everything for you, it is going out and working for what you want. It is the hard work, long hours, and innovative ideas which drive the American dream. There is no room for an overreaching, entitlement happy government.

Let us push for accountability, responsibility, and innovation.
