The Children Are Our Future

Children are our future ... and the future is bleak...

Actually, from the way the person wrote the article, the problem wasn't so much with technology, as it was with the kids not understanding basic vocabulary words.

From the link....................

“Do you know what combine means?” I asked. Finding that he didn’t, I explained it meant “add.” Satisfied that I’d put Kevin on the path to success, I moved on to observe other students—and found their iPads displaying sentences like Round 119 to the nearest ten and Find the area of the following triangle in square units. If Kevin didn’t understand combine, were other kids understanding words like round and area? Not to mention square units?

Then I found a boy staring at a computer screen showing a number line with the question What number comes before 84? He listened to the instructions and tried 85, then 86, then 87, getting error messages each time. Thinking the problem was the size of the numbers, I asked him what number comes before four. “Five?” he guessed. It dawned on me that he didn’t understand the word before. Once I explained it, he immediately clicked on 83.

Maybe there should be a bit of emphasis on vocabulary and the meaning of various words. Once the kids understood what the question was, they seemed to be able to come up with the correct answers.

And yeah, the teacher did mention that the kids could use their devices to play games and be distracted, but that isn't the fault of the technology, as it is the teacher's responsibility to maintain order and discipline in the classroom.

In today's world words are fluid- they mean what the user wants them to mean- e.g., shall not be infringed is constantly misrepresented- intentionally. The words in the constitution mean absolutely nothing unless/until they serve a particular purpose- general Welfare is usually written general welfare- that's incorrect and changes its meaning- we're constantly referred to as a democracy- we're a representative republic- it's institutional and systemic and infectuous-

Yes, kids are our future- and our responsibility-

These children are walking into a world based on technology. It is an extremely good thing that they are introduced to it early - it is what they are going to be working on and around for the rest of their lives.

As an aircraft mechanic, you know what I used every single day to complete my job? An IPad. It does not matter what job you go into anymore, technology like mobile personal computers are going to be pervasive within it.

That is a problem with schools no longer putting any real emphasis on civics rather than the technology.

Though I have to be honest, with some of the bullshit things my son has brought home from school I am not sure I actually want them to be teaching him civics. I knew more than my teacher by the time I finally ran into government/econ and things were not as lost back then. You are tight, kids are our responsibility and it is time parents started acting like it.

That’s why any nation wishing to conquer us will simply turn off the electricity.

How classroom technology is holding students back

Your article is as bogus as a $3.00 bill. Those concepts would never be taught to a first grade class of 6-year old kids.

In the Common Core standards that is a third grade standard.
The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom

“Touch-screen tablets for young students have become all the rage. Some districts are even buying iPads for every kindergartner”

Once again, you made an epic failure at addressing my comment. Typical!

Your point was stupid and meaningless. The OP stands, kindergartens are using electronics to teach.

Welcome to the 21st century Methuselah.

Until they have to do it without electronics.

You’re the poster child for why public schools are an epic failure today.

Guess what, dumbass! They do learn to do it without electronics. Once they learn that, anything else is wasted time.

Do you do your taxes by hand, counting your fingers and toes?

Yeah, sure.
There’s zero reason to use electronics in a classroom that’s not a computer class.

My God, you are such a fucking moron! Go get a degree in education so you might actually mke some sense.

Admiral don't fall for the bait. You keep on teaching and those that complain(can't do the job you do) will simply complain, whine, throw a SISSY fit, etc.

LOL.

Ya, zero reason to give kids the tools to deal with the realities of the modern workforce and modern life.

Virtually everyone has one or more computers on their person 100 percent of the time. Such tech will be MORE pervasive as our kindergartners grow up. The idea they should not use such things in the classroom is beyond ludicrous.

Simply put, you do not use the tools of last century to prepare people for the next one.

Kids don’t need public education for that.

Hell, Los Angeles spent a BILLION dollars on iPads and within 24 hours the kids had them all hacked and were either playing games or watching porn.

Is that what your extensive experience in education has led you to believe?
