The Catholic Church Made You 'Weird.' That's Not a Bad Thing.

People in the West are psychologically unlike the rest of the world. Global studies find that Western Europeans and their descendents tend to be more individualistic, less conformist, and more trusting of strangers.

But why? New research posits that the medieval Catholic Church, and its emphasis on monogamous marriage and the small family unit as the foundation of society, is responsible.

Science, countries and regions with a longer exposure to the Western Catholic Church are more likely to show the individualist, nonconformist psychology common to Western nations. The church may have inadvertently molded this psychology with medieval-era policies that ended cousin marriages and other tribe-like bonds, and created nuclear, monogamous households.

They changed that cousin thing more than once, when it was convenient. That said, it's an interesting piece.

The differences have more to do with genetics than religion, IMO.

This smells an awful lot like assuming causation from correlation, and an intentional, overwrought case of it. I see no data regarding the overwhelmingly catholic countries in, for instance, central america and south America.

I don't feel weird. Such little things like wanting a family and treating each other with pure thoughts and honesty can't be all that bad, while those who attack us can be defended against so that we smite the scum.

Just sayin'.

Did you read the article?

Yes; sounds reasonable but only one aspect of course. Renaissance, Reformation, Secularism......and the negative tribalism of Socialism.

Greg
Yeah, it’s probably due to quite a few things.

I believe the battle between socialism and individual rights has persisted since the beginning of man and influences more than we know.

Within the Church this battle still wages on. Her beginning was decidedly anti-socialism. It’s been a back and forth ever since.

What it smells like is a desperate attempt to explain what makes western civilization so successful while ignoring the most obvious answer.

Yep! Secular government and classical liberalism.

I've known some "spiritual" people who saw demons, angels and stuff; I just considered them nuts.

Having said that; it's not that they're not REAL in some sense; just not something I'm into.

It's more then that I used to read three bibles at the same time, went to church every day, now I refuse.

Devil is real, I am no body .

I want to keep it that way
That reminds me of an exchange on a movie where this angel explains that you really don’t want to meet an angel. It was priceless.

It’s pretty funny how times have changed.

The researchers also measured the intensity of kinship ties and found that the more intensive people's kinship networks, the less individualistic they were

how intense does it have to get before it's called a cult??

According to the definition wouldn’t all religions be classified as a cult?

Not all uses of that word are negative.

To your point... albeit in an indirect way.

The atheist sloth ethic, or why Europeans don't believe in work

Neat article.

He’s speaking of liberals really. For “spiritual” examples he listed everything but the largest and most influential religion in world.

“They are into whatever: shamanism, astrology, crystals, witches, paganism, rebirthing, past life regressions, drumming, basically anything mainstream culture is not.”

according to the other article, liberals are the vanguard of catholicism inadvertently that does make sense especially when searching for the true religion. when non conformity is achieved.
