Mini Crossover Concept on Yahoo! Autos ? Pictures, News

This is why American car companies are dropping like flies. I haven't seen the damn thing and I already want to own one.

Listen to the description of this:

Mini Crossover Concept

The Mini Crossover Concept hints at what a fourth body variant of the Mini family might look like. The Mini Crossover Concept is notable for several reasons, such as that it's the first Mini over 4 meters (that's more than 158 in., for the metric-impaired) in length, while the other dimensions — 62.9 in. height, 72.0 in. width and a 102.6-in. wheelbase — also dwarf previous Minis. It also has four doors, all-wheel drive and four individual seats, the rears mimicking the fronts in their contours. Company officials say the Mini Crossover seeks to "combine the individual style of the brand with enhanced versatility within the interior and innovative functionality throughout."

Although the Mini has four doors, one of them isn't conventional: the passenger door on the B-pillarless driver's side slides open like a minivan. The rear cargo door is also unique, opening by swiveling to one side. The rear door can also be fitted with a transport case that stows on the outside to increase luggage capacity.

To make the targeted active lifestyle driving experience more exciting, the Mini Crossover Concept boasts a full-length folding roof cover, which can be opened from the front or the rear, or both.

Two cool features are the Mini Center Globe and the Mini Center Rail. Mini says that presenting the car's central displays in a three-dimensional globe layout "allows even more consistent integration of functions and the appropriate presentation of information and entertainment options." The Globe, which uses laser projection technology, can be separated into two separate hemispheres. The Globe can be operated by several different methods: a touch-sensitive surface, a trackball on the steering wheel and buttons in its lower section. The front-seat passenger can also use a keyboard that extends from the dashboard.
