I've seen pop-science stuff like nat-geo and the history channel make assumptions before. Here's how they do it. First they make a guess and then they expound on that theory as if it was proven.

Anthropology really begins in 70,000 BC, when an incredibly huge volcanic eruption practically wiped out the human species. Denying that, archeologists dig up un-human fossils to create false narratives in order to get funding.

Humans didn't evolve physically from the lack of sunlight and scarcity of food. So that must have been when the mind was born.
