The Bill Maher appreciation thread

Really enjoy his weekly show and loved his documentary Religulous. Please post any funny memes or video clips here. Or, rabidly vent against him. I don't really care. It's all good.

I'll start with this clip. It's beautifully written and should be required viewing for any rational human being.

Ah I wish I would have seen this thread before. I'm a big fan of Maher. There is no commentator I trust more. He is always spot on and isn't afraid to speak his mind. He is the voice of reason in politics.

I like Maher though I think his railing against religion is counter-productive. More you attack someone the more defensive they become. Wanna change religion somehow, attacking it isn't the way to go about it.

I happen to agree with your premise, but I've given up all hope.

Religion will probably end the human race soon.

Doesn't mean we have to be quiet about it.

And you were right in another way. Religion, like nationalism, has nothing to do with the truth, and everything to do with identity. Human beings are prone to place identity over truth, and they are worse for the wear because of it.

When he place identity over truth, we make monsters of ourselves, and a hell all around us.

I'd agree religion is the planet's gravest threat today. Just don't think attacking it is the way to go about reducing the threat.

Why? Atheists have murdered more people in the last 100 years than all of the victims of religious murder in all of mans history. If you want to talk about threats to people it is atheists.

Designating a religious group as an enemy has been done, in 1930s Germany. In the Crusades with the Muslims, in Northern Ireland with Catholics and Protestants. It doesn't work. All you do is elevate the standing of the faith as believers close ranks, plus any not really into it before will get back into it once it's being attacked.

The threat religion in general represents needs to be handled more subtley and over time. A direct assault wont work.

Atheists have targeted, and murdered more people than any religious group has done to any other. Your claim that religion is a threat to the world is simply not born out by fact. As far as Maher go's. Once upon a time he was funny but then he started to think he was smarter than everyone else and he quit trying. Now he go's for the shock value because he ISN'T that smart.

Colbert is smart, far smarter than maher, and because of that he is far funnier.

My Mom thought Colbert was seriously conservative. :) Brother and I had to explain him to her. :)

Hell, that paragon of liberal radio Randi Rhodes thought he was a right winger. How fucking dumb can you get! I have actually had dinner with Colbert when he came to San Francisco for a show. This was about 14 years ago IIRC, and the guy is sharp as a tack. My wife and I love him, and his satire.

Never heard him, only his character on the show. Wasn't thrilled though at the prospect of his getting a talk show. Imagine many are just like myself and don't know the real person, only his character. Actually guy mgiht be a total prat. Thus he should stick with what's made him known, the show, not try and go from 'porn' to 'legit movies.' Know your limits. :)

I suggest you take a look at the stuff on youtube to get an idea of his humor. The best bit of all is the Chevy Chase celebrity roast. Colbert is on after the 40 minute mark IIRC, and he absolutely skewers Chase without ever once using a swear word.

Colbert is spot on with everything. I haven't come across much that can be disputed.

yup, that was because of atheism.

Not because of long standing civil wars in societies where human life was never considered all that valuable to start with.

China was a really peaceful place before the Communists.

Except for those 30 million who died in the war with Japan
And the 20 million who died in the Taiping Rebellion.
And the 25 million killed in the fall of the Ming dynasty.
And the 40 million killed in the Mongol Conquest

List of wars and anthropogenic disasters by death toll - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

But it was those atheists, dammit. Those atheists are real bastards, as long as you try to pretend that genocides in Australia and the Americas didn't happen.

So let's be honest here, - HUMAN BEINGS are generally nasty to each other.

Oh goody, yet another wiki piece of nonsense. Did you know there are people who claim that Temujin killed over 1.7 million people in an hour! The 40 million people claim is a wild estimate. And, it is ALL people killed under Temujins rule over his entire lifetime, not just the Chinese.

30 Million killed against the Japanese? Maybe. The dictator was a pretty atheistic dude. The fall of the Ming dynasty took over 30 years, and was fought by a bunch of independent warlords as well as the Manchu's. So, possibly that many died. The Taiping rebellion probably did result in the deaths of 20 million or so.

However, ALL of the deaths you are talking about aren't even remotely religious. They are wars of conquest, independent of religion so they don't support your theory in the slightest.

Dude, you are responding to a two year old post!

Okay, Are you kidding about the Taiping rebellion? The guy who led it thought he was the brother of Jesus Christ.

The Taiping Rebellion or Taiping Civil War : Taìpíng Tīanguó Yùndòng, literally "Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement") was a massive rebellion or civil war in China that lasted from 1850 to 1864, which was fought between the established Manchu-led Qing dynastyand the Christian millenarian movement of the Heavenly Kingdom of Peace. The Taiping Rebellion began in the southwestern province ofGuangxi when local officials launched a campaign of persecution against a Christian sect known as the God Worshipping Society led byHong Xiuquan, who believed himself to be the younger brother of Jesus Christ.

And this was a LOCAL Civil War in China!

Okay, let's look at this gem.

30 Million killed against the Japanese? Maybe. The dictator was a pretty atheistic dude.

"The Dictator"? You mean Tojo? He thought Hirohito was a God.

Yes, but the claims that Mao killed 60 million people is totally valid. Supposedly. And not at all Cold War Propaganda that needed to make Stalin and Mao into Hitler Equivalents so people would go along with it.

Not a fan of Bill's but he has his moments from time to time. Earlier this week was one of them when he inadvertently spotlighted what an utter lightweight Chrissy Matthews is.

Don't know who was appearing on whose show as I just happened upong them on the tube. They were discussing various things Barry might/should try to accomplish in his waning days in office, and Bill suggested legalizing pot. Matthews seemed confused by it or something, so Bill proceeded to inform him of Barry's pothead history including his days with his Choom Gang partners. And it was all news to newsman Matthews as he learned for the first time about the Choomers. A guy whose job is political reporting, commentary, punditry not smart enough to read Barry's two books about himself. Books written, like others by aspiring pols, to help inform/educate the public about themselves. I'd have been embarrassed as hell in CM's shoes but he just acted his dumfounded self until they moved on to something else. So it was a nice job by Bill, albeit completely unintentional.

Congratulations to Bill Maher!

For the first time in about seven and a half years he did not make totally inane and cruel and stupid remark about Sarah Palin or any of her family.

Here, I'll make up for that...
