"Thomas Jefferson, who knew something of Libya and responding to terror in that region of the world, wrote: “Weakness provokes insult & injury, while a condition to punish it often prevents it.” He also said: “Whatever enables us to go to war, secures our peace.” Years later that was shortened to “peace through strength.” Nowhere is that more true than in the Middle East."

You're quoting Jefferson? One of the founders, who when given a chance to fight for his home, ran?

On June 4, 1781, nearly five years after authoring the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson fled Monticello just minutes before the arrival of British troops. His term as governor of Virginia had just expired, and Jefferson declined to continue his service, leaving the state without leadership during some of its darkest days.

In his defense, Jefferson made a blunt admission. With Virginia under invasion by a "powerful army," Jefferson felt he was unprepared by his "life and education for the command of armies." As a result, Jefferson wrote that he "believed it right not to stand in the way of talents better fitted than his own to the circumstances under which the country was placed.”

Next you'll be saying Mitt Romney, who protested to send other men to Vietnam, avoided the draft and went to Vietnam..is a "strong military leader"..

Interesting about Jefferson.

And rethugs will say that Mittens was studying the debacle that the French got into in Viet Nam and was trying to keep the USA from doing same.

Yea yea that's the ticket. Mittens wasnt avoiding service. He was "studying for his foreign service exam". Which he must have failed.

But Mittens sure had no balls for a real fight. And it is showing up in his campaign all these years later. And he is an idiot on foreign affairs.

Liberals lowered the bar so much that anyone who didnt spit on the troops at that time is seen as backing the military, which is fine by me......

The "spit on the troops" thing is a myth. It was maybe done a handful of times..and has been conflated into something it wasn't.

Fact is..Liberal policies..which are those "benefits" that troops receive after the fighting is done were cobbled by Liberals.

Conservatives love the big shiny military..but want to hide the vet with no legs in a homeless shelter.

Liberals disdain fighting, will do it to defend themselves..and want to make sure the vets are taken care of..

Jefferson's an interesting fellow. It's sad conservatives latch on to only parts of the man's storied life. Jefferson changed his mind on the "refresh the tree of liberty" thing after the French revolution. He also changed his mind on Federalism after becoming President and having to deal with petty conservatives over using taxes to arm the Military to fight pirates. They wanted to pay the tribute.

No we realize that stuff. The French Revolution was a disaster and run by commies, it's kind of the template for all commies since. So I agree with his position, if you have immoral people running the show, then you get the French, not American Revolution.
Again, I like his posistion on the Barbaray pirates and they kicked ass to the shores of Tripoli, but conservatives then arent the same. They like a huge centralized government back in the day, conservatives now, dont.
