the all American redneck thread

I'd just like to point out to you folks that the original American rednecks weren't good ol' Southern Boys, but good old Pennsylvanian boys who happened to be making corn whiskey in the Monongahela Valley.

They were getting screwed by the insider elite (in this case that would be George Washinton, et al) who were protecting the interests of the larger RUM distillers on the East coast.

And THOSE good old PA boys actually took their shootin irons and fought against the oppressive goverment, too, god bless 'em. They wore red scarves so they could identify themselves while fighting against the FEDERAL forces send to crush their rebellion.

Likely they can up with that idea from the original rednecks of Scotland.

Those Scottish Presbyterians wore red scarves to signify their blood oath against the imposition of the Church on England on the Scots.

I'm also informed by Wikipedia that:

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest organized armed uprising in American labor history and led almost directly to the labor laws currently in effect in the United States of America. For nearly a week in late August and early September 1921, in Logan County, West Virginia, between 10,000 and 15,000 coal miners confronted company-paid private detectives in an effort to unionize the southwestern West Virginia mine counties. Unionization had succeeded elsewhere as part of a demographic boom that was triggered by the extension of the railroad and was characterized by unprecedented immigrant hiring and exploitation in the region. The battle was the final act in a series of violent clashes that have also been termed the rednecks War, from the color of bandannas worn by the miners around their necks for friend-or-foe identification, a war some inaccurately claim was the impetus of the common usage of the original Scottish term redneck in the vernacular of the United States.

There does seem to be one underlying theme of the term redneck though...the SCOTS are always involved.

Ya' gotta love those Scots whose contempt for those in power is often backed with real live action.

Say whatever you want about those rednecks they're not obsequious toadies.
