Environmentalist helps Abramoff probe

WASHINGTON — The head of a Republican environmental advocacy group is set to plead guilty in the Jack Abramoff scandal and is cooperating with an FBI investigation into corruption involving Congress and the Bush administration, two people close to the case said Wednesday.

Italia Federici served as a go-between for Abramoff, the once-powerful lobbyist, and J. Steven Griles, the deputy interior secretary during President Bush's first term, prosecutors said Wednesday in documents charging her with tax evasion and obstructing a Senate inquiry into the Abramoff scandal.

Under a deal with the Justice Department, she must cooperate with authorities and is identifying other criminal targets, one of the people said.

Authorities believe Federici may be able to provide information about former Interior Secretary Gale Norton, other Bush administration officials and the contacts that she, Abramoff and Griles cultivated in Congress, the second individual said.

Reid aided Abramoff clients
Senator’s office admits ‘routine contact’ with lobbying firm
The Associated Press
Updated: 9:58 p.m. CT Feb 9, 2006

WASHINGTON - Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid wrote at least four letters helpful to Indian tribes represented by Jack Abramoff, and the senator’s staff regularly had contact with the disgraced lobbyist’s team about legislation affecting other clients.

The activities — detailed in billing records and correspondence obtained by The Associated Press — are far more extensive than previously disclosed. They occurred over three years as Reid collected nearly $68,000 in donations from Abramoff’s firm, lobbying partners and clients.

Reid’s office acknowledged Thursday having “routine contacts” with Abramoff’s lobbying partners and intervening on some government matters — such as blocking some tribal casinos — in ways Abramoff’s clients might have deemed helpful. But it said none of his actions were affected by donations or done for Abramoff.

“All the actions that Senator Reid took were consistent with his long-held beliefs, such as not letting tribal casinos expand beyond reservations, and were taken to defend the interests of Nevada constituents,” spokesman Jim Manley said.

Reid, D-Nev., has led the Democratic Party’s attacks portraying Abramoff’s lobbying and fund-raising as a Republican scandal.

But Abramoff’s records show his lobbying partners billed for nearly two dozen phone contacts or meetings with Reid’s office in 2001 alone.

Most were to discuss Democratic legislation that would have applied the U.S. minimum wage to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory and Abramoff client, but would have given the islands a temporary break on the wage rate, the billing records show.

This opens a new door to nab more assholes who took Abramoff favors.

hoo boy, you have to know there are still some nervous nellies in Washington DC... wondering if she will turn on them... well... I guess they should have thought of that before betraying the public's trust.

Either party... If they're corrupt? Indict them, prosecute them, convict them, sentence them to prison, incarcerate them and then throw away the key.

Yeap there is more to go down here.

BTW Harry Reid was cleared by the congress of any wrong doing in the Abramhoff thing if you recall.

Damned right!

FYI
Your article's premiss was retracted 3 days later, Reid did not take any Abramoff money, Abramoff himself spread HIS money to Republicans only, not any Democrats.

Some of the Lobbying firms that Abramoff was associated with, donated to Democrats such as reid. Still looks suspicious, to me, but not breaking the law. Since this article from february a YEAR ago, Rep Ney (R) and Safavian (R) and I believe DoLittle(R) an two of Tom Delay's aids, on one for Rep Ney have been charged, convicted, and jailed in connection with the ill doings of Abramoff.

No Democrats, as of yet. And with the newly partisan Justice Dept ala Monica Goodling and Alberto Gonzales, I am CERTAIN any Democratic senators or representatives involved with the ILL doings of Abramoff would be in jail by now....with all of the Republicans in jail for it?

Summary: On February 13, MSNBC issued a correction of a falsehood previously documented by Media Matters for America, that former lobbyist Jack Abramoff gave $68,000 in campaign contributions to Sen. Harry Reid.
On February 13, MSNBC issued a correction of a falsehood previously documented by Media Matters for America. As Media Matters noted, on the February 10 edition of MSNBC Live, anchor Alex Witt falsely claimed that Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) "collected nearly $68,000 in campaign contributions" from former lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In fact, a Center for Responsive Politics breakdown of Abramoff's donations (here and here) shows that the lobbyist made contributions only to Republicans, not Democrats.

During the 3:00 p.m. ET hour of MSNBC's February 13 Post-Olympics Show, anchor Amy Robach stated:

ROBACH: We want to correct some information we broadcast in a story on Friday concerning Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. We stated that Senator Reid has collected nearly $68,000 in campaign contributions from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff over a period of nearly three years. Now, we should have said that, according to The Washington Post, the money in question came from Abramoff's firm, lobbying partners, and clients -- not from Abramoff directly. MSNBC regrets that error.

But Care dont you know Dems just have to accused of stuff?

You see Rs can get convicted of corruption but all you need to even this out is to just accuse Dems of wrong doing.

Under this same "fairness" one indicted Jefferson completely wipes out all the dozens of Rs convicted ,indicted and under investigation.

Under this same "fairness" one indicted Jefferson completely wipes out all the dozens of Rs convicted ,indicted and under investigation.

Not in my mind... under our system of jurisprudence, he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law... now... considering they have him on tape accepting the marked money and finding it in his freezer, I'd say they probably have a pretty tight case. But he is STILL innocent until the trial is over.

I do think, however, that he should be forced to resign from his committees.

And as far as Jefferson balancing out all the corrupt republicans... that is true ONLY in the minds of republican apologists. And we all know how good their math skills are.

Most of them think under 50% is a majority...
