It will be either one or the other, only time will tell.

President Obama's advisers are betting that the historic legislation he will sign tomorrow will bear fruit quickly, and they plan to do everything they can to highlight evidence of it creating the jobs he has promised. That public relations effort kicks off tomorrow as a two-day swing through the West begins.

But the Republican Party has made its own bet: that the stimulus package that Democrats rushed through Congress will have been deemed a failure by the time the 2010 elections arrive, leading voters to rebuke Obama and reward the GOP with much-needed victories.

Let's agree at the start that every right-thinking American wants the bill to succeed, and that the result is mitigation of the global crisis, and an end to the suffering of Americans in particular.

We do live in interesting times. And time will tell, as there are metrics that will answer the question of whether or not the bill is a success or failure. Renewal of credit, unemploymenet numbers, housing sales. Now would be a good time to make predictions.

Less definitive will be political questions, such as why the bill had to be passed so quickly, why it had to include a reversal of the move away from welfare, why was government control of healthcare included, whether permanent tax cuts should have held a more prominent role, whether "pork" was a major component.

These questions will be fodder of the 2010 elections.

What metics do we propose to establish if the economy is turning around?

I propose

the employment rate - one that actually measures full time workers, minus unemployed and minus those workers who are part time because they cannot find full time employment

Personal and business bankruptsy filings

Saving rate

Home foreclosures

The REAL rate of inflation (not the BS they're trying to pass off as the rate of inflation)

The availability of money to borrow both to the consumers and businesses

Retail and whole sales

Inventories

Housing starts

Housing sales

The international balance of payments

Not really. A majority of Americans support the stimulus. The people who distrust our political leaders are the Republicans who didn't vote for them and didn't trust them to begin with, so its really not that surprising.
