The Obama administration announced with little fanfare Thanksgiving eve plans to lock up nine million acres of land for the endangered Northern Spotted Owl.


The plan would double the amount of public forest lands proposed by the Bush administration for the owl’s habitat in Oregon, Washington and Northern California, and is expected to severely limit commercial activities like logging.


Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, said he is concerned the plan will cost taxpayers millions of dollars.


“Expanding the Northern Spotted Owl’s critical habitat will further endanger the timber industry, the thousands of jobs that the industry supports, and forest health,” Hastings said.

So, what's the big deal?

They've already cut off irrigating millions of areas of farm land in the San Joaquin Valley of California because of some stupid little fish or reptile.

They're doing their best to stop drilling on private land in Texas because of some lizzard that only lives within a 100 acre bit of land.

They've stopped cattle grazing on millions of acres of land in Nevada due to a stupid "Darter fish" that's almost extinct because it can't adjust to natural changes.

The list goes on and on but the American voter seems to be okay with it - until it hits 'em in the pocketbook like it will next year!!!

Apparently the Bush era plan was scraped because it was concluded that it was "politically manipulated". The Obama plan does give room for some logging, and doesn't include any private land.

There is some controversy as to whether more land is the issue in the continued decline of the owl. Seems like more study is needed before they close off this amount of land.
