Mitt Romney's Olympics blunder stuns No 10 and hands gift to Obama | World news | guardian.co.uk

Mitt Romney handed Barack Obama a priceless gift for the US presidential election campaign when the presumptive Republican nominee blundered on his first diplomatic outing by questioning whether London was capable of staging a successful Olympic Games.

In a move that astonished Downing Street, hours before it laid on a special reception for Romney at No 10 he told NBC there were "disconcerting" signs about the preparations for the Games.

One senior Whitehall source said: "What a total shocker. We are speechless."

David Cameron wasted no time in slapping down Romney hours after his remarks were broadcast. On a visit to the Olympic Park, the prime minister said: "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere."

Keep up the good work, Sir!!

Oh come on, I love the British, but it's our duty as Americans, to give them a little rub, but yeah it was a pretty stupid thing to say. I dont really think it matters, if this is an issue for Obama, he has more problems than I thought

Again, someone needs to the the Governor that he's running for President.

Obviously if Romney noticed that London's preparations were insufficient, he shouldn't have said so. As far as handing the election to obama, it is really unlikely that Americans are going to be offended about anything the British think.

Okay. Point out where ANYBODY said this would hand the election to Obama.

Get Mitt back home and let him fire somebody. That always brings a smile to his face and settles him down.

I hope he does that with the Justic Department and lets elimiate all these congressional staffers, it's time for congressmen to actually do some work again!!!!!!!!

The Guardian is as blatantly left wing as any US media. I wouldn't get overly excited about their spin... but, as you have made clear, partisan hackery is preferable to unbiased reporting in your view.

Hack.

You know there are three separate branches of government, right? How does congressional staff apply here?

Thankfully, Sandy Asphedora has a book to write, and can't live here (what with the wedding plans and all.) Maybe she'll be a countess - without the 'o'.

HA!! Remember me tomorrow, bitch.
