I LOVE public domain and open source software developed by public university researchers and scientists, and by the government. And the shit they developed with tax payer dollars have to be put out there for the public to use free of charge.

I'm using a crapload of software and macro spreadsheet models for work that are totally free, I just go to the university or government website and download it for free. LOL, some private companies are charging hundreds of dollars for crap that does the same thing the public domain softtware does.

Who do you think pays for that software?

taxpayer supported public domain software costs me pennies on the dollar, compared to buying the same crap from a private vendor.

thank you University of Virginia! Your public domain software made me kick ass at work this week!:clap2:

So whatever happened to a 'living wage'? You do realize the programmers who create public domain software get little to nothing in return? Do you think that's fair?

No need to pirate anything. The open source movement offers software for free, as in free beer. You can get everything you need - from an operating system to the most sophisicated app without being a crook. Of course if people choose to pay for a proprietary os and associated apps (such as a word processor) then that's their choice.

scientists and programmers who work for universities and the government get rewarded with a government salary and the satisfaction of working in the public interest.

Why does it piss you off that public domain software is made available literally for free to the public? Its a win-win for everyone.

This bunch is pissed off because that gives the average Joe the same advantage as the fellow that is stealing for a living. You know exactly the people I am talking about.

Yes, not only are the public domain tools wonderful, but the information from NASA, NOAA, and other government agencies that publish for the public the results of the research of scientists that are working for us.

Publically funded projects OFTEN provide a far better return on investment (to the commonweal as a whole) than private investments do.

The problem is often proving that contention since nobody is keeping books on the benefits side.

You've obviously never been a student at a University at the graduate level. Most of these programmers get "rewarded" by getting their name out there. All the work they do is for FREE. There's another way to describe this: "slave labor". Now sure, they are not being forced to do this. They do this because it is part of their education, but they do not get paid for this. In some rare cases, the professor may have a grant to pay for the program, but the students do not get paid for their work.

(Honestly, are you people really this dense or are you just trying to post a catchy comeback and hope that nobody who really knows the truth will see it? I'm guessing that it's a little of both.)

The problem is that you actually believe what you posted.

Well then they should drop out and get a job.

 They eventually do get a job and make money by writing software at some 'evil' corporation.

I have a graduate degree.

And not everyone is republican, and thinks EVERTHING has to have a profit motive. Graduate students, for the most part are getting tax-payer subsidized education, or get paid stipends from tax payer funded grants . And yes, it is a professional feather in their cap to put out public domain knowlege. The software I used were developed by university researchers who are happy to draw a public salary and put out knowlege and products for free that help the public

Don't you republicans have any respect for science? Basic science should be put out in the public domain for free.

If some dude wants to go write propreitary software, no one is stopping him or her from going to work at a private vendor.

why do free, taxpayer subsizided products piss you off?

You have a graduate degree in what exactly? And why do you keep bringing up Republicans? Try to stay on topic please.

You obviously don't know anything about "free" software. Somehow you think university researchers write it and draw a public salary. That rarely happens.

Seriously, why discuss something you know nothing about? You are blinded by your arrogance.

obviously this topic makes you angry.

I downloaded and used the software for free. It was developed by a public university scientist, who put it on the intenet for free.

Its a simple as that. A similar product from a private vendor would have cost me hundreds of dollars.

the professor's salary, and his NSF grants costs me pennies a year in taxes at worst.

I can see why this pisses you off.

You didn't answer my question: You have a graduate degree in what exactly?

Look, I have no problem using 'free' software. I use it all the time. But people like yourself need to understand that a professor usually doesn't write it and the students get room, board and tuition if they are lucky enough to get grant money. They don't get paid for the software.

You have no need for personal information about what my degree is in or what school I wnet to. I have a graduate science degree, if you simply have to know something personal about me.

I don't understand your argument at all. Are you suggesting graduate students get p aid private industry salaries? Why the fuck would we do that? They are fortunate to be getting a tax payer subsidized eduction at the finest university systems on the planet, and their grants and stipends come mostly from tax payers. They will leverage their taxpayer funded education in the future, if they so choose, to make big bucks in private industry.

Why should taxpayers pay students or professors private industry salaries? You've making the implicit argument that public domain software is more cost effective.... which must piss you off as a republican, that's the only reason I can think that you want to increase the cost to the taxpayer by bumping graduate student sti pends up to be on a par with private industry. Sorry, you're nuts.

Not everyone always has the profit motive in mind, like you do. I never ever met a graduate student who demanded to be paid a private industry salary to do university research, and I never met a single graduate student who whined and moaned about putting their research out for free, for public use and public knowledge. That's part of science.....putting knowlege in the public domain for free. Its a benefit to society.

Ahem... Why do you keep calling me a Republican? Jeez. And the fact that you don't want to tell me what your graduate degree is in means it won't help you with any of your arguments. Understood. And I never said I wanted to "bump-up" the pay for graduate students.

It's clear that you have your own misconceptions about me and know nothing about the software industry. It's also clear that you are a socialist bordering on communist. Until you work in the real world, you will know nothing of how important it is to make a profit.
