First of all: the Mayor of Camden, NJ is a Democrat. The state's Governor has nothing to do with this.

Second, if you read the article, this is just a question of folding the police department into the County police to circumvent the union's blocking of attempts to make the police more effective.

According to the article, the actual number of policemen will be reduced from 460 to 400. That is a reduction of about 13%, not 50%. Here is the relevant portion of the news article:

The STATE has been running Camden PD for over a decade. Not the city, the state.

The "metro" county force will hire some of Camden's PD. About 50% of them. The result? Less cops on the street. Period.

Christie quoted he "100%" supports this.

And YES, the STATE of NJ oversaw the Camden PD for many years. Fact.

Which begs the question, if the state had to run the PD how bad is the local government? They cant even run a police force?

Disbanding a police department is certainly not rare. For various reasons, cities in California have been disbanding police departments for years, then contracting out for the Sheriff's department, or even for a neighboring city. Sometimes because the police department has just become too expensive to maintain independently as the situation in Compton, or sometimes because the existing police department is so eaten up with corruption that it can't survive as in Bell.

Here is the way it works. When the police have cars that say "CITY OF______" The police department is under the control of the Mayor of that city. When the police cars say "STATE POLICE" it is under the control of the governor. The governor cannot interfere with the running of city police departments anymore than the Mayor of Camden can tell the State Police what to do.
