Tesla doubles the power output of the Powerwall without changing the price

Tesla Motors held its 2015 Annual Shareholders Meeting today at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. During his presentation, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, announced that Tesla will be doubling the power output of the Powerwall, Tesla’s residential energy storage system, to 7KW at peak usage and 5KW for steady usage.

Musk confirmed that the price will remain the same, $3,000 for the 7KWh daily cycle version and $3,500 for the 10KWh weekly cycle version.
Tesla offers 2 different versions of the Powerwall battery system. The 7KWh pack is built to be discharged daily in order to take advantage of a solar power installation or to manage usage, especially if you are paying your electric utility by time-of-use. It could also be combined with multiple packs in order to take a solar installation completely off-grid. The 10KWh pack is meant to be use as a backup power system. Ideally, it should only be use in case of power outages, but the battery pack is built to withstand weekly cycles for over 10 years.
Musk admitted that even though the demand for the Powerwall has been overwhelming with over38,000 reservations in just one week, the overall reaction was mixed. The biggest complaint was the steady output of only 2KW which isn’t really enough for an average household. They listened to the complaints and adjusted the offering to a now impressive 5KW.

U.S. opens investigation in Tesla after fatal crash in Autopilot mode
June 30, 2016 - The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Thursday it is opening a preliminary investigation into 25,000 Tesla Motors Model S cars after a driver of one of the vehicles was killed using the Autopilot mode.
The agency said the crash came in a 2015 Model S operating with automated driving systems engaged, and "calls for an examination of the design and performance of any driving aids in use at the time of the crash." The investigation is the first step before the agency could seek to order a recall if it finds the vehicles were unsafe. NHTSA said in a statement the driver of the 2015 Model S was killed while operating in Autopilot mode in a crash on May 7 in Williston, Florida. NHTSA said preliminary reports indicate the vehicle crash occurred when a tractor-trailer made a left turn in front of the Tesla at an intersection.

Tesla said in a blog post that this is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated. Tesla said "neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied."

The company said "the high ride height of the trailer combined with its positioning across the road and the extremely rare circumstances of the impact caused the Model S to pass under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S." Tesla said that "Autopilot is getting better all the time, but it is not perfect and still requires the driver to remain alert. Nonetheless, when used in conjunction with driver oversight, the data is unequivocal that Autopilot reduces driver workload and results in a statistically significant improvement in safety when compared to purely manual driving."

Driverless cars are kind of a scam. We won't see 'em in our lifetimes, not on the open road. In carefully controlled areas, sure.

Why? Because a driverless car that works right 99.99% of the time is still a death trap.
