A top Marine officer here says the compromise that gave control of Fallujah to an Iraqi brigade in exchange for the withdrawal of Marines may be a failure.

This was a noble experiment that may not work out," Col. Larry Brown, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force's operations officer, said this weekend. "The brigade has not performed as well as we had hoped."

His comments were the strongest indication from the U.S. military that the effort to contain the insurgency by depending on the Fallujah Brigade was failing. It also was a sign that the model - turning to former Iraqi military including those who served Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) - would not solve security problems after the U.S.-led coalition hands sovereignty to Iraqis on June 30.

The Fallujah Brigade was established to end three weeks of combat in April that killed 600 to 700 insurgents and 10 Marines. The Marines withdrew to the outskirts of Fallujah after Sunni members of the now-disbanded Iraqi Governing Council objected to the bloodshed. Led by former members of Saddam's military and made up largely of insurgents who had been fighting the Marines, the brigade was supposed to bring peace to the city and meet several demands.

This is what happens when war is politicized. This crap just pisses me off. We should have gone in there, kicked ass, SECURED the area ourselves and then held it until the June 30 hand over.

But nooooo, too many concerns about being PC. This is a friggin' war for cryin' out loud. War, in its very essence is not PC!

Heaven forbid,, we should damage a mosque or hurt the sensibilites of the muslims before they can detonate their sorry asses in our face.

Yeah, I am a bit ovet the top this morning

Wasn't good that they pulled back in the first place, but they are trying to get the Iraqis to do their own. I applaud the attempt, now they really have to deal with it.

Yes, but the point is is that we were pressured by the politicos to turn it over in an attempt to appease the idiot cleric.

Now none of the agreements made are being honored, there is no security and our guys died for what?

Let the generals wage war; not the politicians.

Oh I agree it was the politicos, it always is. Eisenhower was probably lucky that FDR was sick, even then there were problems.

In no way was I blaming the Marines, hope that makes it clear.

You were clear - no offense or misunderstanding. My son is over there and it just pisses me off to no end when lives are wasted. People die in wars, make no mistake. I support our cause; but let's not be stupid!

Fallujah should never have happened. The shock and awe should not have stopped until the entire hell hole was secure. Then turn over sovergnty [sp].

RANT - sorry.
