It appears that 1 out of every 5 employed people are in temporary worker status. Companies are finding that they can save money by not paying insurance, unemployment taxes and higher wages by using temp workers. It gives companies more flexibility too but the old loyalty is lost. It used to be the companies gave security in a long term job and the employees gave loyality to the company. That is going away. The problems with the growing temp worker (est. to get to 25% in a couple of years) is no insurance and no unemployment. When they get laid off they need government assistance and cannot pay their medical bills. Who knows how this will play with the new health bill that was passed this year.

That's been happening for a decade, although not to the extent it is now. It's one reason why unemployment stayed low during the BA because companies figured out it was more profitable to employ two employees at less direct cost than one.

that's because they can't spell.

If employees come from an agency, they're well screened and tested. Typos like yours are forgiven, if not too many, but spelling common words will not get you placed in a job you want.

The Temp thing has been going on for a long time. The part time thing takes advantage of the same thing. Poor or no benefits is a part of it. What do you get out of it as a plus??? Learn Skills and job experience. Stepping stone. Get even by going into competition at any level. :)

Well screened? You gotta be kiddin'.
Just ask Meg Whitman how well the employment agency screened the housekeeper she hired through them that turned out to be an illegal.

But that's also a problem. It's been happening at my shop as well. They've been getting rid of permanent employees and hiring temps. Lots of turnover too.

It's sort of bodes badly for people that want to buy houses or start a family.

I agree. We put too much trust in Institutions and Government which always seems to come back and bite you in the ass. When the hurdles get too high, people will generally reroute. Sometimes when we stray from "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" we compound problems.

I'm just going by my own experience with two national temp agencies, and each of them was very thorough checking former employers and references. Also the tests (for clerical/administrative work) were extensive and took all morning and half the afternoon). I have no idea how an agency might do a background check for a laborer, but I assume they do because as a business, they could be looking at lawsuits. Usually a laborer like a housekeeper doesn't go through an agency anyway, but will answer ads in newspapers or use the local state employment office.

Except that this particular hiring practice began around 2002, when the bar was set much lower. Ironically, the Bush tax cuts were intended to have the ol' "trickle down effect," but it turned out just the opposite: Fire a good person so you can hire two lousy ones and not be obligated to pay any benefits nor overtime.
