On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry.

Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires.

This capacity enabled Lincoln to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to preserve the Union and win the war.

Lawyers today following the Do-Good and the common-sense school, what about Abe? So, yes, two-thirds of these states are dead, dying or waving amputee stumps, but you know, they didn't file the right paperwork, and actually there's hypothetical provisional governments of these states that have Not seceded, locked away in my head somewhere. Next time you start a bar fight, you know, stay away from the million man nuclear bomb blast.

Ya that's all mostly true basquebromance, interesting stuff. Self-made man, border states, not many presidents from out west.

Lincoln was considered a "4th grade lecturer without good grammar".

does this mean we no longer have a bromance?

Seward was the first to recognize Lincoln's talent. quickly recognizing the futility of his plan to relegate Lincoln to a figurehead role. he became close friends with Lincoln.

the qualities we generally associate with morality: empathy, kindness, honesty, sensitivity can also be impressive political resources. Abe proved that.

Pop historians claim that Lincoln preserved the Union when in fact the Union broke up under his watch. The Industrial Revolution was on the horizon and slavery was doomed. Lincoln should have compromised and lied and begged and offered to kiss the asses of Southern radicals to preserve the Union but he let it go. Like most idiots of his time he thought the Civil War wouldn't last more than a couple of months. He was wrong about just about everything but he had the gift of gab.

Well it sure is changed. Quote a lawyer before Abraham Lincoln. "I Want to Take you to A Gay Bar". Lincoln's hit single, I think. Pop historian. . We no longer see Abe Lincoln as the Radical. What did the "No Change Conservatives" in the South actually DO? They didn't start shoutin' Confedereca' it was a Confederate Union for every President since George Washington. Somebody put two sides of an issue up in lights. The Democrat-Republican war.

" Lincoln freed us&we saved Lincoln. We won the war.We watched & prayed all night. Lincoln had the courage to sign the document. We died for this proposition. Slavemasters became our segregation masters." - Jesse Jackson

lol another Lincoln hug fest. Fake history is necessary for some modern political fiction narratives dear to left wing Democrats.

The Chase Court was the most corrupt SC in American history, Lincoln a railroad lawyer interested in the Whig 'American system', meaning giant Federal subsidies for his own state, for railroads, canals, and other big projects. The only he reason he held on after the 1862 mid-terms, when his original constituents thought he was turning the war into a war on slavery instead of what the Republicans originally ran on, protectionism for northern business and huge taxes on the South to pay for it all, was his private army controlling the ballot boxes in the border states. Some 700,000 to a 1,000,000 blacks died in his 'contraband camps', they didn't want all those 'free' blacks fleeing north, so they forced them into 'damps' and killed them off via disease and starvation, except for some few they herded onto Federal plantations and forced to work for $3 a month, and couldn't leave without written permission. Nobody like to point out why there wasn't a massive exodus of blacks from the South, during or after the war, even while running around claiming they were 'free n stuff'. Why would they stay if if the South was worse than the North???

Yes. Lincoln deliberately started the war; he knew exactly what he was doing.

No Comrade Picaro. Sometimes the proletariat can no longer stand the abuses of ze bourgeoise . Christian Communists unite the sign of the X, the humble Communist. Christ first took the power of God and distributed it among the people. It was time Comrade to create the ultimate State.

What???

Posting drunk only compounds the problems when English is your second language.

And, it was northern New England states that first latched on to secession threats as a tactic to get their own way, and almost before the ink was dry on the Constitution. This was the case until the 1830's, when Southerners tired of the bullying and began their own secession threats, forcing the northern states to put up or shut up. They also won all the Court battles over slavery as well, no need to secede over that, either. Nope, it was over massive welfare programs for northern states and corporations is all, none of which would benefit the South, who would be paying for a big chunk of it.

Comrade... Comrade... You have challenged the facts of the True Genius, That I Must correct you. Start with a couple from Ulster-Scotland so we can pretend they are Irish 200 years later. They toured the United States with a "Bonnie" Scottish song, for communism. You see Hail Columbia was once the Communist anthem this derives from heavily. Why does the Scottish flag now have a Star Upon it?! WHY?! WHY?! I tell you comrade.... The State of Texas rebelled by the native people of Texas against some far Spanish government dictating Capitalism, and your old capitalist pig government, left them out to dry for 8 long years! So! You can even see the Lone Star Flag in the background of this video, as it is the Bonnie Blue Flag. Capitalist oppression made the actor woman be Okinawan. Strange... So yes comrade... Glorious Revolution!!!

there is no evidence that Lincoln was immobilized by depression. he did have a melancholy temperament, but that is not an illness of depression. it is a source of creativity and achievement. Lincoln found constructive ways to alleviate stress. he was the one who swept off his colleague's anxieties by telling stories. through the appalling pressures he faced, he had an unparalleled faith in his countrymen.
