In an effort to retain teachers and staff, every employee in the public school system in Gulf County will see an increase in their wages in the coming months.
The school board voted on Tuesday to temporarily increase each employee's wages by 4 percent beginning Nov. 30 with funding granted by the federal government. The increase will last for one year.
"We do this to retain our teachers to make sure that we keep the good ones that we have," said Superintendent of Schools Tim Wilder. "I think everybody deserves this, every employee in our school system from bus drivers to custodians."
The funding comes as part of $26 billion Jobs Bill signed by the President Barack Obama in August in an effort to save roughly 300,000 teacher and government worker jobs nationwide.
The bill provides $10 billion for states to save the jobs of 160,000 teachers and also allocates $16 billion to help cover the cost of Medicaid.
In a statement by Gov. Charlie Crist from the Governors Press Office following the August decision, Christ commended the actions by the U.S. Government in helping Florida maintain its educational staff as well as assisting in maintaining Medicaid benefits.
