Teacher: "...they're dumb as hell"

High stakes testing where the results all fall on the teacher with none touching the students.

Kids aren't totally dumb.

They figured out (especially in middle and jr high schools) that the test results have no bearing on them, only their teachers and schools. I've had more than several kids tell me this.

As long as we have "voluntary learning" classrooms with no incentives for students to actually try, these things and worse are going to occur.

I remember a science teacher in about seventh-eighth grade.
He told the whole class "you're dumber than a buncha them thar two year old ******* crawling in a watermelon patch".
Grades skyrocketed over the following weeks.
I suppose I just revealed my age and the area I grew up(got older) in.
