But there is a good reason to fire a teacher for appearing in a pornographic film (and it doesn't matter if it's a gay film or a straight film). Teachers are role models. They are supposed to exert a positive influence over a child's life. If the kid sees or hears that a teacher appeared in such films makes those activities acceptable, and I don't think any school would want to set the precedent.

This isn't about gay rights/anti-homosexuality. It's about teachers being held to a higher standard of personal conduct.

I'm actually kind of surprised that they were able to fire him, truth to be told. The Teacher Thug Unions make that as difficult as pulling teeth. So you have to imagine these films were pretty awful if they didn't want to stand up for the guy.

Since the act is done away from the job, are other activities engaged by teachers which offend school boards also restricted/punshed? Should a board have the power to fire a single teacher who engages in premarital sex, or a heterosexual teacher who kills animals for sport?

The nature of a sexual act may offend some, but engaging in "perverted acts" has yet to be defined. Are teachers hired with a morals clause in their contract, and does said contract define what is 'normal' and what is perverted (is a manual supplied)? Pornography itself is relative to a community, is it not? So is soft porn okay, but not hardcore porn? And what or who decides which is which?

In the case of the Congressman, the only people who have the ability to fire him are the voters. In the case of the CEO, the board could fire him, but more likely, they'd ask for his resignation and get it. (Because the guy wouldn't want to lose his stock options, etc.)

And again, I think some are held to lower standards. In the last year, I saw a supervisor get fired for having sex with an employee in her office. (It got around because he took pictures on his phone and showed them to his buddies on the first shift.) Another supervisor knew about it but didn't tell the manager. He got fired.

I've also seen people get fired for falsifying time reports, saying bad things about the company on their resume and posting it on CraigsList, and goofing of on the internet when they should have been working.

So, really, other professions are held to a pretty strict standard, compared to this guy.

But don't you think they should be? I screw up on my job, maybe something doesn't get delivered on time, maybe a production line has to have some lost time. Bad, but not the end of the world. A teacher messes up on his or her job, they've pretty much screwed up a kid for life. Given the sensitivy of their work, and the reprecussions of something traumatic, shouldn't they be held to a much higher standard?
