The co-founder and current chairman of the Tea Party Patriots was arrested at a New York City airport Thursday after trying to check a gun that he had licensed in California.

Mark Meckler, 49 years old, of Grass Valley, Calif., handed a box containing Glock 27 pistol and 19 rounds of 9mm ammunition to a Delta Airlines ticket agent around 5:20 a.m. Thursday. He was trying to check in for a Detroit-bound flight at LaGuardia Airport, police said. When Mr. Meckler told the airline worker that the box contained a gun, they called Port Authority Police officers, who have jurisdiction of the airport.

Mr. Meckler told police that the weapon was registered in California and showed them his pistol permit. He told officers he arrived in New York last Sunday and that he carries the gun because he receives threats, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Since Mr. Meckler did not have a New York pistol carry permit, police arrested him on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon, Mr. Brown said. Mr. Meckler was released without having to post bail after being arraigned Thursday afternoon. He couldn't be reached for comment, and district attorney officials said they had no attorney information for him

I see this as no more egregious than say, Senator Webbs aide carrying a pistol ( for which he had no permit) and 2 boxes of ammo into the senate office building...but hey thats me.

If you read the rest of the article all he gets is a violation and loses the gun, if he can show he owns it leagally in his own state.

Of course, if NY made it simple to get reciprocity for out of state permits this wouldnt be an issue, but NY gun laws are designed so only off duty police, retired police, and close friends of people in power can get carry permits.

So basically there are two tiers of citizenship in NYC, those who can concealed carry, and those who cannot, even if they have 100% clean record.
