Agha Jan Motasim says withdrawal of Nato forces this year will also make it harder for militants to justify their war

A veteran Taliban leader has offered a startling view of Afghanistan's conflict, saying militants no longer have the support they need to overrun the country when Nato combat forces leave.

In an interview with Pakistan’s Express Tribune newspaper, Agha Jan Motasim also said the withdrawal of occupying troops would rob the insurgency of its legitimacy and repeated his earlier calls for a negotiated settlement.

This soundly dismisses the right wing talking points that Obama is weak. Our troops and our allies and the ANP and ANA have turned around the failed military policy of Bush and Cheney that left such a mess in Afghanistan in 2008 when the Taliban operated unchallenged in 80% of Afghanistan.

Yes, Obama has really got the bad guys shitscared.
Ask any camel jockey Islamic filth right before he blows up some women and kids. He'll tell ya…

Idiot...

Holy shit, my stomach hurts from laughing uncontrollably that someone would believe a) the source and b) the information itself.

The critical thinking skills in this country have taken a vacation....

Actually the Taliban are getting to be dead, wounded and captured or they quit the insurgency.

07/20/14 KP: 43 Taliban militants killed during counter-terrorism operations

At least 43 Taliban militants were killed or injured during military operations by Afghan national security forces in the past 24 hours. Interior ministry following a statement said Sunday that the operations were jointly conducted by Afghan National Police (ANP), Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan Intelligence – National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives.

These ANP and ANA were trained by US and other governments. Our troops did a heroic job to succeed where Bush failed.

Wow, the sheer self deception is breath taking. No one believes the Afghans will defeat the Taliban once we leave. Absolutely no one.

All they have really wanted was for foreigners to leave them to run their own nation..

Do you realize many in the US really want to run their own nation, too? Show US where the Taliban is going to take up the moral position of taking in non citizens from the boarder countries? Show US where the Taliban is apologizing for their actions? WAIT.....you already did that for them.

He is a moderate minister up for election in Ashraf Ghani's government. BTW he is an EX Taliban leader, and has a death sentence on his head called for by the Taliban. The Taliban tried to assassinate him not too long ago and nearly succeeded leaving him with many bullet holes in his body, he was not expected to survive and has been in hiding on and off since his assassination attempt by the Taliban.

What is bullshit? US Special Forces and our military have assisted and trained and built the ANA and ANP to 300,000 in uniform taking the fight to the Taliban.

Do you think our troops don't deserve to say mission accomplished?

After the Russians were driven out of Afghanistan the Taliban took control of the country and held it until the they were toppled after the 9-11 attacks so the outcome after all U.S. and NATO forces pull out will be different why?

Er, yeah.

So that's why ISIS controls the real estate from Aleppo to Baghdad, cause they're a-scared of Obammy

Uh huh

The ISAF are not being driven out by the Taliban. The Soviets did not build an Army and National Police before leaving.

And as Agha Jan Motasim tells you, "“But if the Taliban want to continue the war after the withdrawal of Nato forces it would amount to anti-Islam action.”".

Both candidates in the runoff have expressed intent to sign the SOFA with the US. That will keep trainers and Special Ops in Afghanistan for continued support.

I'll put my money on a thousand US Special Forces against twenty times that in Taliban scum any day to preserve the gains made since Bush left Afghanistan in such a miserable condition in 2008.

First I have seen no one claiming a thousand U.S. special forces will be staying second even if they do and as good as they are Afghanistan is a large country with very difficult terrain to navigate they would be stretched very thin, The Afghan army and national police force has not been tested in a major way and has little combat experience the Taliban have both the Taliban continued the war after all Russian forces withdrew so I don't see anti-Islam action as a major concern of theirs.

First I have seen no one claiming a thousand U.S. special forces will be staying ...

Where have you been?

You ought to listen to our Commander in Chief:

Obama to leave 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan

The residual force, based at various locations around Afghanistan in 2015, will include troops to train and advise Afghan security forces and a separate group of Special Operations forces to continue counterterrorism missions against what Obama called “the remnants of al-Qaeda.”

The ANA and ANP have been tested in the lead for over a year:

Dunford indicated he shares Allen's optimism. “As General Allen departs theater, he leaves the coalition and our Afghan partners postured for success. I'll endeavor to continue the momentum of the campaign and support the people of Afghanistan as they seize the opportunity for a brighter future," he said.

That future depends on a number of unresolved questions.

The 2013 fighting season is approaching and it will be a test for the newly trained Afghan forces who will be at the forefront for the first time.
