UN suspends polio drive in Pakistan after killings
Dec 19,`12 -- The United Nations suspended its polio vaccination drive in Pakistan on Wednesday after eight people involved in the effort were shot dead in the past two days, a U.N. official said.

The suspension was a grave blow to the drive to bring an end to the scourge of polio in Pakistan, one of only three countries where the crippling disease still survives. On Wednesday, gunmen shot at a woman working on the campaign in northwest Pakistan, killing her and her driver, one of five attacks during the day on polio workers. A male polio immunization worker was critically wounded in one of the shootings. This week six other people have been killed who were working on the immunization program, which has been jointly conducted with the Pakistani government. No one has claimed responsibility, but some Islamic extremists charge that the program is a cover for espionage.

At the U.N., Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing as "cruel, senseless and inexcusable." He said the eight workers were among thousands across Pakistan "working selflessly to achieve the historic goal of polio eradication." Sarah Crowe, spokeswoman for UNICEF, said the vaccination program has been suspended everywhere in Pakistan until an investigation by the Pakistani government is completed. "This is undoubtedly a tragic setback, but the campaign to eradicate polio will and must continue," she said. Some provincial governments in Pakistan continued to immunize children, independent of the U.N. drive.

Prevention efforts have managed to reduce the number of cases in Pakistan by around 70 percent this year compared to 2011, but the recent violence threatens to reverse that progress. Suspicion for the attacks has fallen on the Pakistani Taliban because of their virulent opposition to the polio campaign, but the group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, denied responsibility in a telephone call to The Associated Press. Police say they have killed two militant suspects and arrested a dozen others in connection to the attacks but did not say whether they were Taliban.

Militants accuse health workers of acting as spies for the U.S. and claim the vaccine makes children sterile. Taliban commanders in the troubled northwest tribal region have also said vaccinations can't go forward until the U.S. stops drone strikes in the country. Insurgent opposition to the campaign grew last year after it was revealed that a Pakistani doctor ran a fake vaccination program to help the CIA track down and kill al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden, who was hiding in the town of Abbottabad in the country's northwest. The number of attacks this week on polio workers is unprecedented. They came as the government started a three-day vaccination drive Monday targeting high risk areas of the country, part of an effort to immunize millions of children under the age of five.

And while no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, the Pakistani Taliban have prevented such programs in the past, saying they are a cover for spying.

The Taliban began voicing opposition to Western-backed health programs after a Pakistani doctor was imprisoned for helping U.S. intelligence agents run a fake hepatitis vaccination program aimed at locating then-fugitive al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden. In July, armed men killed a Pakistani doctor working for the World Health Organization on a national immunization campaign. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries were polio remains endemic.

19 December 2012 - The killing of eight polio workers in Pakistan in two days is a brutal reminder of the hurdles facing health teams trying to eradicate the virus from one of its few remaining strongholds.

Pakistan, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only countries where polio is endemic, which means transmission of the virus has never been halted. The shootings, in a series of attacks, represent a major setback in the quest for a polio-free world. The decision by the UN to suspend the immunisation campaign is understandable but deeply regrettable.

So far this year there have been 56 cases in Pakistan - a significant reduction on the nearly 200 cases last year. Unless immunisation is re-started promptly it will allow the virus time to spread and infect more children. It will also risk the disease spreading beyond Pakistan's borders to India, which has been polio-free for more than a year. The virus is highly contagious and spreads through the faecal-oral route - via contaminated water or food. It can damage the central nervous system causing paralysis and even death.

Karachi - where four female health workers were shot yesterday is one of a number of areas in Pakistan where wild poliovirus is being spread. The others are districts in the Balochistan Province, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Health officials point out that Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan repeatedly re-infect one another due to significant population movements between the countries.

"That would have been devastating."

Saddaf Malik, one of the polio workers in Lahore, said the killings sent a shudder of fear through him and his colleagues. "We will carry on with our job with determination, but we want the government to adopt measures to ensure the security of polio vaccinators," he said.

Nigeria Violence Halts Anti-Polio Program
March 05, 2013 — Nearly a month after nine health workers in Nigeria were slaughtered as they prepared to administer polio vaccinations, the polio eradication program remains at a standstill in Kano, a state health officials call the epicenter of the disease.

Officials say other polio vaccination programs in Nigeria are operating and they are working to beef up security to assure hundreds of health workers it is safe again to give vaccinations. At a church in the Nigerian capital, residents of northern Nigeria tell horror stories about how they survived militant attacks in their hometowns, and how others did not. Pastor Sarana Chinda, from Kano state, says one of the many sad results of insecurity is that children in Kano are no longer getting vaccinated for polio, a deadly, contagious disease that has been wiped off most of the planet. This year, the only new cases that have been reported so far are in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, three countries in the throes of security crises involving Islamist militant groups known to preach against polio vaccinations, saying they are part of a Western plot to sterilize Muslims.

In February, nine women were shot outside a polio center in Nigeria as they prepared to go from house to house vaccinating children. Chinda says local polio workers no longer operate in public, if at all. “They can’t go round because if they go, they will kill them,” Chinda says. Health officials say the suspension of the Kano immunization program is a temporary measure while they increase security and convince vaccinators they will be safe. Rotary International District Governor Felix Ayo Obadan expects vaccinators in Kano to be back on the job in the coming weeks. “They are now addressing the problem of the insecurity and granting assurances to the health workers that they will be protected in their normal routine job,” Obadan says, adding that eradicating polio is not just about protecting Nigerians, it's about protecting the world. “It’s an infectious disease. If there is one polio case anywhere in the world, the rest of the world is in danger.”

Other health workers say its not just polio prevention that has been impacted by new security threats in Nigeria. Fourteen foreigners are missing after being kidnapped by Islamist militant groups last month. Also, Doctors Without Borders says it has withdrawn some of its staff from the north, a move Nigeria mission leader Ivan Gayton says could reduce the quality of care for patients with potentially deadly diseases like malaria and cholera.

He says the only way aid workers can stay safe is to convince all parties their only purpose is to provide health care. “We just want people to recognize, everyone, everywhere to recognize, health care workers are apart," Gayton says. "We are not involved in the religious debate or the political debate or what they might call the clash of civilizations between the West and the Islamic World. We’re not part of that. We’re neutral.” Sometimes called the Nigerian Taliban, Nigeria’s most infamous Islamist militant group is known as Boko Haram, a name that means “Western education is a sin.” Human Rights Watch says the group has killed more than 1,500 people since it began violent operations in 2009.

Sun, Aug 18, 2013 - Somalia is suffering an “explosive” outbreak of polio and now has more cases than the rest of the world combined, an official said on Friday.

Vaccine-wielding health workers face a daunting challenge: accessing areas of Somalia controlled by militants, where 7 out of 10 children are fully immunized. Polio is mostly considered eliminated globally except mainly in three countries where it is considered endemic: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. India marked a major success in February last year by being removed from the WHO’s list of countries plagued by the disease. Somalia now has 105 cases, figures released on Friday show, and another 10 cases have been confirmed across the border in a Kenyan refugee camp filled with Somalians. Globally there have been 181 cases of polio this year, including those in Somalia and Kenya.

Vaccination campaigns in Somalia have reached 4 million people since the outbreak began in May, but those health officials have limited access to about 600,000 children who live in areas of Somalia controlled by the armed Islamist group al-Shabaab. “It’s very worrying because it’s an explosive outbreak and of course polio is a disease that is slated for eradication,” said Oliver Rosenbauer, a spokesman for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at the WHO in Geneva. Somalia was removed from the list of endemic polio countries in 2001, and this year’s outbreak is the second since then. It began one month after Microsoft founder Bill Gates helped unveil a six-year plan to eradicate polio at the Global Vaccine Summit. That effort will cost US$5.5 billion, three-quarters of which has already been pledged, including US$1.8 billion from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The outbreak in Somalia does not set back the six-year plan, Rosenbauer said, because unpredictable and intermittent outbreaks were programmed into the timeline. In al-Shabaab-controlled south-central Somalia, disease surveillance is functioning, but health officials are likely not to able to detect all polio cases. Mohamud Yasin, a retired doctor who has treated polio throughout his career, said: “It’s indeed worrying because this comes at a time when the country is still hugely affected by the raging fighting, which prevents volunteers from accessing people in need of vaccines. It may take time before we can confidently say we have universal coverage of the immunization.”

In a sign of how difficult it is for medical providers to operate in Somalia, the aid group Doctors Without Borders announced this week it was pulling out of the country after 22 years because of attacks on its staff members. MSF, as the group is also known, was not taking part in the polio vaccination campaign. Somalia shares one significant trait with the three endemic countries: pockets of severe violence where populations can be hostile to health care workers. In February, gunmen believed to belong to a radical Islamic sect known as Boko Haram shot and killed at least nine women taking part in a polio vaccination drive in northern Nigeria.

Less than ten years ago-----a young opthalmologist told me----with great
pride--- of his relatives and friends------who had JOINED UP-----and he added--
"YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE FIGHTING FOR"

actually I did----but I was very discrete about it---the poor
kid did not even know I am a jew and almost dropped
dead when he found out

Osama bin Laden ----was a saudi/ yemeni----he went to
afghanistan in SUPPORT OF THE TALIBAN PROGRAM and
KNOWING he would be welcomed by like minded
people-----HOPING TO MAKE AFGHANISTAN part of that
SHARIAH UTOPIA he envisioned ----something like Yemen once
was and is becoming again. He also wanted to invade Saudi
arabia -------There is no reason to "compare Osama to the
taliban"--------they ere identical twins ideologically.
Did you imagine that Osama went to Afghanistan for the
cuisine?. Libya is under threat of being controlled
by similar ideologues---and being turned ---
INCREASINGLY into a shariah 'UTOPIA"


go right ahead and tell me "I don't believe you---where is the link"---
its your way of propagandaizing your own personal agenda which
is anything but benign---IMO--supportive of the SHARIAH UTOPIA.

Right now your best bet for a shariah utopia ---is still yemen----

Oh---I missed something Coyote accused mathew of a "GENERIC HATRED
OF ALL OF ISLAM" ------well I missed it-----probably because the accusation
is so baseless -----something like saying hatred of ADOLF HITLER is a
GENERIC HATED OF ALL THAT IS GERMAN

Now remember everyone----lets not tie the violence
going on in Pakistan and Egypt and Syria etc etc
with anything "POLITICAL" All those dead bodies
in the gutters of those countries are-------tragedies
