Sun Ra

This man has released around one hundred albums and all are genius (which is quite a feat). While he is known for taking jazz to a new level in experimentation, even his traditional-sounding works during his early recording years are gold. He is funny, brilliant, and strange (to say the least). If you wish to get into him, I would suggest you start with the album Angels and Demons at Play (1965).

Keep in mind that this isn't a defining album that exemplifies his overall sound. This is just something accessible for you to get into if you wish to. Also keep in mind that that album was actually recorded in the fifties even though it sounds so modern.

I too like Sun Ra, though I've only had limited exposure to his music. I'm always fascinated with eccentric figures, and he's sure one of them.
