Suggestions for stimulus/infrastructure spending with enduring benefit

If we are going to spend a trillion additional dollars on stimulus with an emphasis on creating and/or updating our infrastructure (which I believe is the best approach to get something enduring for our money/efforts), we should focus on the big things that will not get done if the Federal Government doesn't do them. Lets not squander the opportunity on things state and local governments are supposed to be doing, like building schools, bridges, etc. Obviously schools and bridges (other than nationally significant bridges such as those that improve ports, etc.) are important, but spending federal money on them will just mean states and local governments will spend less on them, and more on something else. We will go further into debt and won't have significant or lasting impacts on education or our transportation systems.

Here are a few suggestions of important things that will pay back huge dividends, and which only the Federal Government can do:

Create a nationwide hydrogen production and distribution system. Use wind and solar for the energy to separate the hydrogen from water. This could dramatically lesson our dependence on oil in the relative short term, and could accelerate getting us to a 100% renewable energy economy in the long term, while eliminating the stranglehold large corporations and political despots have on energy as a side benefit. If the government pays for the facilities and distribution system, and if we don't need to mine or pump anything from countries/companies to get the hydrogen, and if consuming the energy doesn't pollute or contribute to global warming, why not make energy to individuals and industry free? Talk about a competitive advantage! (Free energy could balance out the huge cost of manpower disadvantage we have with the developing world economies and possibly solve the riddle of how you can have 'free trade' without destroying the standard of living in the developed countries.)

Create large-scale desalination facilities in coastal areas and a national pileline system to bring water to wherever it is needed.
That we continue to have droughts and large areas where crops can't be grown on a planet mostly covered by water is inexcusable. If Global Warming is even vaguely the threat we have been told it is, this one had better be a priority.

Create a large-scale atmospheric CO2 removal system. (I'm not even a big global warming type, but this makes sense for all sorts of reasons, even if GW turns out to be far less of a threat.) Instead of shooting for 'CO2 Sequestration,' set the system up to 'mine' the atmosphere for carbon, which industry has many uses for, and which could be used much more extensively, for things like building materials (carbon bricks, carbon composite structural members & panels), aircraft and automative frames, light weight engines, etc.).

Lastly, improve the national electrical grid. Create the improved arteries to move power regionally and leave it to states, utilities, etc. to make the local improvements.

These would obviously be very big and costly programs, but they would clearly emply millions, would pay back much more than they cost, and would leave us immeasurably stronger and able to face the challenges of the future.

Thanks for listening,

And thanks for posting Bob, welcome to USMB and I must say that was an impressive first post. Some good ideas in there - and I'm not even an American! Jeez we could do with a few of those things

We should, if we must spend money on infrastructure, Rebuild some of our Industry. Rebuild the steel Industry, rebuild our ship building Industry, rebuild our textile and clothing industry. Build an industry to provide us with all the things we must import now, like light bulbs and other items.

If we bail out the car manufactures we should change the way they work and make them profitable.

I would like to see a canal project across the southern United States Border. Dig it and the world will pay to cut through rather than down to Panama. It will also be a better deterrent than a fence to keep out illegals. The dirt that will be mined will be usable for a wide variety of things from replenishing soil for crops to raising low lying areas like Louisiana's coast line. We could even pay the Mexicans to help build it. Houston's and San Diego's ports will be huge.

America had got to reindustrialize itself.

The FED should lend DIRECTLY to Americans seeking to make business investments HERE.

Eliminate these economically destructive FREE TRADE policies which reward industries that import manufactured goods into the USA. Never never never never NEVER allow our government to contract with a company which is not 100% entirely an AMERICAN company.

Eliminate no bid government contracts.

Disallow corporations from doing business here if they've moved their HQ offshore to avoid paying taxes.

Start investing in R&D in industries that can help us solve our dependence on imported oil.

Invest in EDUCATION...not only for kids but for workers needing retraining.
Education is a lifetime experience, not just something one does when one is young. A 40 year old worker is NOT over the hill.

Start rebuilding the public infrastructure which we have been allowing to fall apart for the last 40 years.

Cut our bloated military. Get most of our troops out of other nations. Let the Europeans and Japanese defend themselves for a damned change.

INVEST IN JOBS JOBS JOBS JOBS JOBS.... for Americans.

Create a meaningful employment service such that when a person is looking for work, they can really get some HELP finding a job.

What we have NOW calling itself state employment services is a freaking joke...a bad joke.

This is where workers should be able to find TRAINING to find work, too.

I don't agree with that. We need to get rid of the FED. Every dollar is DEBT. They create the dollars from nothing, all that's left is debt.

The thing you as yet do not understand is that every dollar past present and future has been created out of nothing but faith.

Please tell me, for example, where the dollars that you do believe have real value GOT that real value, okay?

Where does that value come from?

If you tell me gold, then I will realize you don't know jackshit about value or money or for that matter gold.

SBA sold out to the bankers and the bankers have become accustom to stripping American wealth through SBA via creative accounting. When did it start? I have no clue yet I can tell you my nightmare with the whole adventure.
If anyone is interested in this just take a hard look at the tax dollars distrubuted through SBA in the last ten years.

Agreed an American should never get an overseas company on the phone when calling a government agency.

All good points!

Dollars should be based on US infrastructure and the Peoples good will and be issued as credits without being debt to private foreign bankers. There are plenty of economists plans out there that use that model. They are ignored because the charter banks rule the world's governments.

These same foreign bankers also own the majority of gold. So of course that won't work if you want to chop them off at their knees.

But Rock - isn't that akin to.................socialism?????

If the Government is hell bent on spending billions then do it right. And no the Government should not own them.

If I can not prevent the Government from spending billions I want the money spent well and for a long term solution. Something that benifits the Country.

One VERY bad point in there, The Government has no Constitutional right to bail anyone out, though I supported the first one. However the Government IS RESPONSIBLE for our Military. We should be increasing the military not decreasing it. We need at least 600k more troops and probably another 400k support personnel.

Cutting the military is the worse thing you can do. We have enemies around the world. We need a large strong military to take the fight to those enemies as needed. I do not want them fighting here.

Get rid of all the BILLIONS spent on unconstitutional social programs. It alone takes up the largest share of our yearly expenditures.

Translation...cut off everybody's welfare checks but my own

I would vote for the removal of Social Security and Medicare from Federal coffers in a heart beat. Of course that will never happen, What SHOULD happen though is every damn penny collected for those programs should be ONLY used for them.

As it is now the ONLY reason either program is in danger is because when the retards made the programs they allowed for the raping of the funds for any Government expenditure. And who were those people? Why they were DEMOCRATS. And who is it that refuses to fix it? Gee DEMOCRATS again.

Here are some ideas that might be worth exploring. Don't know the cost but worth checking out:

1. Housing: Double the weight on the interest payment for mortgages. For every $1 spent on interest payments on mortgages, deduct $2 from your taxes.
This gives existing home owners a reason to stay at home rather than rent and it could take homes off the market. Folks who are renting, on the other hand, have a solid reason to buy.

Hopefully, this dynamic will reverse the housing tide.

2. Corporate Tax: For every 1% increase in hiring, reduce 2% in a company's corporate taxes. So, for example: a corporation with 20,000 employees and a 30% tax rate.
If they decide to hire 2000 people, i.e. 10%, then reduce their corporate taxes by 20%. So their tax rate could go down from 30% to 24%.

3. For pure green energy companies, abolish corporate taxes for the next 4 years.
