The ACLU has successfully stopped Santa from visiting public schools in Baldwin, Kan., because his presence constitutes illegal proselytizing by the school, reports the Baldwin City Signal.

After receiving a letter of complaint from the American Civil Liberties Union (search), the school board there voted to put a stop to the nefarious activities and said it will re-examine how it treats all religious holidays in the schools.

The ACLU complained that in a visit to an elementary school last year, Santa gave out candy canes and asked the kids why Christmas is celebrated. The kids had the nerve to pop up and answer Jesus’ birthday.

jimnyc, what do you have against the ACLU? don't you want us all to where white uniforms and walk through the streets hand in hand while we are all spoonfed BS about everyone being a winner?

Needless to say, I disagree with the ACLU. Even if you don't believe Jesus was the son of God, then you can at least respect that he was arguable the most important philosopher of western civilization.

What the hell are you talking about? I simply posted an article that was on Fox news. Have I EVER stated my opinions on the ACLU? I defy you to find my words on how I feel about them.

Why do you respond with nonsense?

I guess I should have said I was being rhetorical and sarcastic.

And besides, you're such a hardcore conservative of course I know what your stance is.

My apologies if I misread your sarcasm as your feelings on my post.

I doubt you know my stance, as I've never made it known before. Truth be told I have mixed feelings about the ACLU. I think they do plenty of good, but when I read issues like this I see just how much bad they can do as well.

Believe it or not I used to be a member. There was a time when the ACLU stood for something, protecting our rights. They have turned out to be nothing more than a special interest group in their own right, with a political and social agenda. They defended NAMBLA, who does not need defense, but rather a bullet lodged in every members sick ass brain, but did not defend the man in Florida, who was told he can not display the American Flag. They provide their services to people who do not like under god in the pledge, but do not give this same courtesy to the women told she can not have a bible on her desk at work. A little one-sided, you think ?

I think ACLU support of NAMBLA alone is cause to hate them. Who the hell cares how many rights of people they "save" when they are causing children to be exposed to the worst men in the world.

 whats next??? the tooth fairy? the easter bunny? these shits stop santa from making has rounds at school in Kansas but in Oregon the schools are allow to teach religion [force them] muslim at that. the ACLU is today what the KKK was in the 60s.

Y'know, for an organization with the word 'liberties' right in the title, all these people seem to do is ban things.

The nature of Christ or even his birth may not be definite, but his existence is pretty much historically truthful, so why can't those that believe in his divinity have a holiday to celebrate him?

How long have Jews lived in this country? You haven't heard of them trying to ban Christmas, have you?

I guess in theory the idea of pleasing every religious and racial denomination all the time is a nice one, but it's ridiculous to think that one day, the entire country is going to turn around and say, 'well, we all love each other now, let's all go get a Coke!' Newsflash for every uppity rich idiot living off of his/her daddy's trust fund, having nothing to do with their life other than fight for stupid causes like this: life is hard. People can be intolerant. Christmas is a popular holiday, it used to be a time when everyone, no matter what they believed, could generally be nice to each other. Don't ruin it just because you feel guilty hanging a christmas tree in front of your Muslim housemaid.

Thank you.

***steps down off soapbox***:D

I agree: since when does tolerance for differences mean the stamping out of every reference to other's beliefs??? I just don't see how anyone can claim that the constitution of the us mandates the stamping out of every possible reference to anything that could be different from your neighbors.

How can it be okay to teach about "alternate lifestyles", sex education and the like but not okay to teach about what Christians believe in? I don't think that just because Santa was in school they forced all the little non-Christian children to genuflect on an alter?

This country is going to go down if we don't step up and solve the real issues facing our society.

I wonder if any of you actually read the local article from Kansas? If you did, you know that the ACLU did not file a lawsuit or barge in to stop Santa, they sent a letter as did some parents to express concerns about the way things were done. The board is now working with these parents and the ACLU to fix what problems exist. No one has banned Santa.

As far as NAMBLA goes, the ACLU defended the web provider for the NAMBLA website which was at the center of this case. The ACLU did not directly represent, nor defend NAMBLA. Though, the ACLU did say they supported NAMBLAs right to oppose age of consent laws. The case was about whether NAMBLA was encouraging its members to molest children, a charge NAMBLA denied. ACLU only defended the web provider, though some limited legal advice was provided to NAMBLA itself.

Eric, the ACLU has, on many occassions, defended Christians. The ACLU just recently defended a student who was told he could not wear his crucifix to school because it may have been a "gang symbol".

The ACLU also fights the war against government tyranny. John Ashcroft and John Poindexter are currently working on a system called "Total Information Awareness". This program would allow the government to record every e-mail, web page, credit card transaction, library check-out, book store purchase, etc. that we all do each day. They will then create a profile on every American and decide whether we are a "security threat". GW Bush is on record supporting this. ACLU fought against the Patriot Act, and continues to fight Patriot Act II. These bills hand over large amounts of our civil liberties to police and prosecuters. They make it legal for police to search your home without cause. They make it legal for you to be held without access to counsel.

You cannot fight for freedom abroad, while opposing freedom at home.

Have you ever heard of "carnivor" ?

I was involved in getting the FBI to release the source code for review by independent auditors. "Total Information Awareness" is not the first of its kind, nor do I fear it will be the last.

As far as the ACLU, common sense is in order here, I could care less if they want to defend a web host over pornography, but how can you defend them when there are children involved. We have our constitutional rights, which I am all for, but they must be exercised with restraint, responsibility, and good judgement. Tell me this was the case ?

I am getting sick of them tying up our courts, and wasting taxpayers hard earned money, with silly lawsuits to protect or advance the cause of tiny special interest groups, that in no way makes this country a better place.

I do not beliee that the ACLU fights the war against goverment tyranny. They have their own agenda meant to force their beliefs of the world on others. That is no different from any other interest group who wants the laws of this country to bend at their own whims.
